Severe Storms Thursday Night… Snow Showers Friday Afternoon… Wednesday Update – 4pm #alwx @wvua23

Good Wednesday afternoon! It’s been a wet day for most of Alabama, as a weak upper level disturbance has tracked across the area. At 4pm, showers continue across portions of central and south Alabama. A warm front will take shape and move across the area on Thursday, with another wave of rain.

Tonight, expect temperatures to remain steady through midnight, with 40s area-wide, then temperatures will rise slowly after midnight. Expect a few showers overnight, under a cloudy sky.

Rain will become heavy at times on Thursday, as a deep surface low develops to our west and a warm front lifts in from the southwest. As some instability moves into the area, strong to severe storms will become a concern Thursday evening and Thursday night. The main risk areas will include HWY 82 and points south or from Reform to Tuscaloosa to Clanton and points south. Isolated tornadoes and damaging winds will be the main threats. The main time-frame is from 7pm until 3am Thursday night. If we get a tornado warning, tune into WVUA for non-stop, live severe weather coverage. I’ll be here! See the map below.

Very cold air will quickly move in ahead of an upper level low on Friday. Showers wrapping around the upper level low will transition to snow showers and flurries for much of our area Friday afternoon and Friday night. Accumulations are unlikely south of I-20, but for areas near Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Anniston and points north, a quick dusting is possible. If you want to see a big snow, don’t get your hopes up with this event. Given it’s a tricky upper level low, this forecast could easily change. Models seem locked onto the best risk of accumulating snow across north Alabama and Tennessee, where several inches are possible. Temperatures will start off in the 40s Friday morning, then drop into the 30s during the afternoon. See the map below…
