Slight Rain Chance Monday Evening… Sunday Forecast Update — 7:00pm

Good Sunday evening! Today was quite warm for this time of the year. Across Alabama, we saw highs reach the low to mid 70’s thanks to decreasing cloud cover during the day and a warm southerly breeze. Tonight we will see the clouds return and that will help keep our low slightly warm at 53°. Also, if you are hitting the road tonight, keep an eye out for patchy fog during your drive.

The mild weather continues into the beginning of December as temperatures remain near 70° Monday afternoon. Monday night we have the chance of scattered showers for the area, but showers will be more prominent in Northwest Alabama. Tuesday morning we will see the shower possibilities diminish and we lose a few clouds.

A small surface backdoor cold front could bring some cooler temperatures and additional cloud cover to eastern Alabama on Wednesday. For areas east of I-65, expect things to be a little cloudier and cooler, with highs in the low-mid 60’s. The rest of us will remain very nice thanks to the upper air flow being zonal (west to east) throughout this week. This will keep our temperatures mild and balmy with partly cloudy skies through Friday.

As we head into next weekend, the upper air pattern begins to shift, and the threat for rain moves back into Alabama. Temperatures may take a slight dip as we head into the weekend; however, these highs are still above average for early December.

In the tropics, the National Hurricane Center has officially ended the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season. There were 8 named storms, 6 hurricanes, 2 of which were major hurricanes (Category 3 or above). Thankfully for us here in Alabama, none of these storms really influenced our weather. We can take a break from the hurricanes for a few months before the 2015 season begins May 1, 2015.

Cloudy and Mild for Sunday… Saturday Forecast Update — 8:30pm

Good Saturday evening to you! We have had a rather nice Saturday, some stubborn clouds, but very comfortable temperatures out there this afternoon. The pleasant warmth will continue tonight and into the day on Sunday!

A partly clear sky overhead tonight as temperatures only drop into the upper 40’s and low 50’s tonight. Sunday will remain on the cloudy side, but mild conditions prevail and by Sunday afternoon, expect some locations to be in the low 70’s! Some very mild and pleasant weather is expected not only for Sunday but into the work week as well.

The clouds stick around Monday and we will see some scattered showers be wrung out of those clouds Monday afternoon and evening. This will not be a washout, just widely scattered showers across North and Central Alabama Monday. Temperatures for Central Alabama will be back in the upper 60’s and low 70’s.

Partly cloudy skies and only a slight cool down into the mid-upper 60’s Tuesday through Friday. Some rain is trying to swing into Central Alabama Friday, but the zonal air flow aloft is keeping us in the nice, warm, and mainly dry bubble to start off December. These above average temperatures are quite nice after spending much of November below normal.

Warming Trend Ahead… Friday Forecast Update – 3:30pm #alwx

Good Friday afternoon! With a good supply of sun, temperatures have warmed nicely this afternoon, with most areas reaching the middle 50s. While that feels better compared to Thursday’s cold temperatures, we are still below average for late November. Skies will remain clear tonight, with temperatures reaching the lower 40s by 7pm and upper 30s by 10pm. Expect a low in the lower 30s across the area, with a few locations getting a light freeze.

Iron Bowl Saturday is looking great in Tuscaloosa, as Alabama takes on Auburn. Look for a good supply of sun during the day, with a high near 64. Temperatures will drop into the middle 50s at kickoff and lower 50s to end the game. A light jacket may be needed if you’re making your way out to Bryant-Denny.

As the upper air trough continues to lift out and warmer air continues to spill in, temperatures will reach 70 on Sunday and Monday, with an increase in clouds. With a south wind, moisture will quickly spread back into the state, but rain is unlikely through the middle of next week. I can’t rule out a shower or two on Monday and Tuesday, with a rain chance at 20%. Highs will drop back into the upper 60s on Tuesday and Wednesday, then return into the lower 70s to end the week.

Chilly Thanksgiving, Warmer Weekend… Wednesday Forecast Update – 4pm #alwx

Good Wednesday afternoon! Today has featured a beautiful Fall day, with sunny skies and cool temperatures. Most areas reached the upper 50s to near 60 this afternoon, which is only a few degrees below average. A weak cold front will be passing through the state tonight and early Thursday, which will cause temperatures to drop well below average. Expect lows in the lower to middle 30s tonight, with a mostly clear sky. Highs will struggle to reach 50 on Thanksgiving Day; in-fact, areas north of I-20 will stay in the 40s all day. A northwest breeze will make conditions feel even cooler, so you will need the jacket if you are going to be outside. Temperatures will dip into the lower 40s by 6pm…

The upper air trough lifts out of the area over the weekend and early next week, so a warming trend will take over. Expect highs to reach the middle to upper 50s on Friday, with lots of sun. We’ll start off Friday morning and Saturday morning in the lower 30s… Highs will reach the middle 60s on Saturday and lower 70s on Sunday. As moisture levels increase, clouds will also increase on Sunday and Monday. I can’t rule out a stray shower or two on Monday and Tuesday, but most areas will stay dry. Expect a partly sunny sky both days.

Cool Days Ahead… Warmer Weekend… Tuesday Forecast Update – 4pm #alwx

Good Tuesday afternoon! We’ve got some clouds spreading over Alabama, as a disturbance moves in from the west. Moisture is overspreading the cool and dry air over the state, with some light rain and sprinkles over the southern part of the state. A few light sprinkles or light showers will be possible across west and central Alabama later this evening and tonight, but I don’t expect anything heavy. If anything falls in your area it will be hardly noticed. Temperatures will get colder tonight, as the upper air trough deepens over Alabama, and cooler air gets pulled into the state. Temperatures will drop into the middle 30s late tonight.

Skies become sunny on Wednesday, as the deep surface low develops and moves up the east coast. A weak secondary cold front will pass through Alabama Wednesday night, dropping temperatures back into the lower 30s by Thursday morning and Friday morning, with highs in the lower to middle 50s on Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving will be cool, but skies will be mostly sunny.

A warming trend will take over as the weekend gets here, with highs in the middle 60s on Saturday and near 70 on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. As moisture levels increase early next week, a few clouds will move into the area. Expect a partly cloudy sky on Sunday through Tuesday.

Cooler Weather Ahead… Warmer Weekend… Monday Forecast Update – 4pm #alwx

Good Monday afternoon! It has turned out to be a nice day across Alabama, as temperatures were able to warm into the 60s for highs. Parts of central and south Alabama actually made it well into the 70s. It will get chilly tonight, with lows in the upper 30s. Expect clouds to increase this evening and tonight, as a disturbance moves our way from the west and picks up some moisture.

Skies will remain partly cloudy to mostly cloudy at times on Tuesday and Tuesday night, but rain is unlikely in our part of the state. Areas around and south of Montgomery will likely see some showers Tuesday night, as the upper air disturbance moves overhead. I expect moisture levels to remain too low to introduce rain in the forecast in our part of the state. Highs will remain in the upper 50s on Tuesday through Thursday. Expect lots of sun on Wednesday through Saturday.

Thanksgiving Day is looking great, with an area of high pressure over the state. Highs will remain fairly cool, with upper 50s likely. Expect lows in the middle 30s at night both Wednesday night and Thursday night. Temperatures will start to warm a bit as a south wind develops on Friday through the weekend. Expect highs to reach the low 60s on Friday and mid 60s on Saturday. A few clouds will start to spread into the area on Sunday and Monday, with highs reaching well into the upper 60s.

Patchy Fog Tonight, Sunshine Returns Monday… Sunday Forecast Update — 8:15pm

Good Sunday evening! Today we experienced a soggy Sunday that was perfect weather to stay indoors to prepare for the incoming family this week for Thanksgiving. Rain moved out of west Alabama around lunchtime, but we have remained mostly cloudy, and reached a mild high of 68°. Some of the clouds should linger around tonight. Look for patches of fog to develop in some areas. With clouds hanging around tonight, we should reach a mild low of about 52°.

Monday we will continue to see clouds lingering during the day until late afternoon, and then we will start to push the clouds out. We will continue to have a slightly warmer temperature with a high of 64°; however, we will start to have cooler air start to rush back into the state. With that air starting to pour into the sate, expect it to be a breezy at times tomorrow.

Tuesday we wake up to the sun returning along with cooler high temperatures remaining in the mid 50’s.  We will also see plenty of sunshine for this week until the weekend when we will see clouds build back into the area. Get out there and enjoy awesome weather this holiday week!

Severe Risk Is Not Expected Today…. Rain & Thunder at Times Today… Sunday Update Noon … #alwx

As of midday on Sunday, I’ve got some good news. The warm front is not making much of a northward progress, and the dry line is quickly moving northeast through Alabama. This means the needed instability for severe weather is not moving into our area. Expect the severe weather risk to be limited to the Montgomery and Dothan areas through 4pm.

Expect rain and thunder at times through 4pm in west and central Alabama before coming to an end this evening. Some storms may produce gusty winds and heavy rain, but severe weather is not expected for our area.

Lots of Rain…. Very Low Severe Risk… Latest Thoughts… Sunday Update – 10:30am #alwx

Good Sunday morning! As of 10:30am, we’re watching the progression of a warm front and the progression of a dry line very carefully. At this time, the warm front was well south of our area, which means the higher instability, needed for severe weather, is well to our south. There’s lots of rain and thunder spreading into the area, but so far there is nothing severe happening.

With a very powerful storm system tracking across the area, we will have to keep a close eye on radar trends through the mid afternoon. There’s plenty of wind shear and uplift over Alabama, so if we had instability, this would turn into a big severe weather event. However, there is little to no instability, so the risk of severe weather is really limited for our area. The best chance of getting isolated severe storms will occur well south of I-20. Anyone along and south of I-20 should keep an eye on any sudden changes between now and 4pm this afternoon. The highest tornado risk will be closer to the Alabama Gulf Coast today, but I can’t rule out an isolated small tornado as far north as HWY 80. An isolated storm or two may produce a damaging wind gusts as far north as I-20, but the higher risk for that is also over southern Alabama.

As I said, keep an eye on the weather through this afternoon just incase anything become severe in your area. The dry line will quickly mark an end to the severe weather risk from west to east this afternoon. It will be mild behind the dry line, but as moisture levels rapidly drop, there will be no additional issues.

Heavy Rain… Few Strong to Severe Storms Possible Sunday… Saturday Night Update – 10pm #alwx

Good Saturday evening! As of 10pm, we’re watching rain and storms form ahead of a warm front over the Gulf of Mexico. The rain and storms will lift northward overnight tonight and should start to impact west and central Alabama after midnight. Rain could be heavy at times, especially around sunrise and continue through the early afternoon. Rain will then end from southwest to northeast during the early afternoon hours. Rain totals will likely reach 1 inch on average, with heavier totals where the stronger storms develop.

What about the risk of severe weather? As the warm front lifts northward during the morning hours on Sunday, unstable air will reach our southern counties, in areas south of I-20. A few storms between 7am and 4pm could produce damaging winds and an isolated tornado or two. The higher tornado risk will be closer to the coast, but stay alert in the red shaded area above incase a storm or two get out of hand.

With strong uplift and lots of wind shear moving over Alabama on Sunday, stay weather alert. At this time, instability looks to remain low across the area, so that will limit the risk of severe storms. If we get a tornado warning, you can join us live on WVUA-TV for the latest.
