Light Rain Showers Tonight, Sunny Sunday… Saturday Forecast Update — 8pm

A sunny start to the day, and temperatures warmed back into the mid 50’s allowing for a very pleasant afternoon. Clouds began streaming into the area this afternoon and some very light rain is starting to fall across eastern and central Mississippi, these light showers will slowly move east overnight tonight.

A mostly cloudy sky overnight with those light showers continuing. There has been much discussion and debate over the possibility of a few snowflakes mixing in with these rain showers. For a snowflake to form, you need temperatures up in the atmosphere to be cold enough to make snowflakes (usually around 15° F). This system is providing some cold air, but that air is close to the surface and there just isn’t enough cold air aloft to form snowflakes. Northeast Alabama might see a bit of frozen precipitation early in the morning as the rain moves east, but aside from them, I think we will simply have to deal with a cold shower overnight tonight. Temperatures will hover just above freezing by sunrise.

The sun returns for Sunday afternoon, although temperatures will not be quite as warm as that cold air really starts moving in during the afternoon and evening hours. A northwesterly wind at 5-10 mph will help usher that cold air back into Alabama. The brunt of the cold air will wait until Monday however. Temperatures to start Monday will be in the upper 20’s, but even with plenty of sunshine, temperatures will barely reach the lower 40’s by afternoon and Monday night will be downright cold, with lows back into the lower 20’s.

A warming trend begins Tuesday afternoon with lots of sunshine, but more clouds are on the way for Wednesday, ahead of the next system. We might see a shower or two Wednesday, but the main rain chance will hold off until Thursday as the low pressure sets to our northwest, and drags rain showers across the Deep South Thursday and Friday. There is a possibility for a lingering shower into Saturday as well. This time of year the temperature at the time of rain is highly important, and for now, it appears that we will remain above any thresholds for wintry precipitation, but that could change over the next several days, so stay tuned!
