Good Friday afternoon! Temperatures continue the slow modifying trend today, as a push of warmer air moves ahead of our next storm system. While this isn’t the pre-Christmas warmth, we are back above average for early January. Skies remain mostly cloudy this afternoon and evening, as low level moisture surges northward out of the Gulf. There is a small chance of a stray shower tonight, but the lack of uplift will prevent anything widespread overnight. Lows will dip into the lower 50s in our area tonight.

A strong cold front will move into Alabama Saturday evening, with a good chance of showers and a few storms ahead of the front. Rain amounts may approach 1/2 an inch in our area, depending on coastal convection. Some models really limit the amount of rain due to a coastal complex of storms, but other models suggest we’ll still have a good coverage of rain in our part of the state. Either way, have the umbrella handy on Saturday. It won’t rain all day, but portions of the day should be wet at times. Highs will reach the 60s on Saturday. Some storms could grow strong during the afternoon hours over northwest Alabama, but the risk of severe weather is really low.

Very chilly air will take over on Sunday and Monday, with highs only in the 40s. Some data suggest highs will only reach the upper 30s north of I-20 on Sunday, with some a few tiny snow flurries north of Jasper and Gadsden. No issues…

The air remains cold all of next week, as we get another surge of colder temperatures to arrive on Wednesday and Thursday. Models suggest even colder air could move in next weekend… At this time, I don’t see any signs of a winter weather event for our area, but we’ll be watching data closer over the next few weeks.
