Showers Ending Tonight… Cooldown Begins… Fall Like Weather… Ian Strengthening In The Caribbean… Sunday PM Forecast Update… #ALwx @wvua23

Good Sunday afternoon! Its been a muggy morning and early afternoon here over Western Alabama. Today we had a few rounds of showers and thunderstorms roll through the area that led to a mainly cloudy day today. The sun started to peak out by the early afternoon in some areas, leading for our temperatures to slowly increase into the low 80s. High temperatures around most of Western Alabama today were in the upper 70s to low 80s. The rain showers should all clear out by around the evening, giving way to partly cloudy skies with a peak of sun here and there. Clouds will begin to move out overnight tonight with temperatures dropping into the low 60s for tomorrow morning. A few clouds may linger into late Monday morning while temperatures rise into the low to mid 80s.

The cooldown starts overnight Monday into your Tuesday morning, where a light jacket might be needed on the way to school or work. Low temperatures hovering around the 50 degree mark for most of us on Tuesday morning will give way to high temperatures in the mid to upper 70s by midday. Sunny skies continue throughout the rest of the week as these temperatures continue to drop off. A few places might touch the upper 40s overnight Tuesday and into Wednesday. Tropical Storm Ian, in the Caribbean, will bring a stronger northern flow which will only help us cool off to well below normal temperatures. High temperatures late next week are looking to be in the low to mid 70s with morning lows continuing to stay in the low 50s and upper 40s. A miniscule rain chance is introduced Friday with the slight uncertainty of Ian’s eventual track. This slight rain chance continues through Saturday and Sunday.

Few Showers Tomorrow… Fall Returns… Tropics Becoming Active… Saturday PM Forecast Update… #ALwx @wvua23

Good Saturday afternoon! What a beautiful day we had today in Western Alabama. High temperatures were in the mid to upper 80s across most of the area this afternoon and early this evening. Sunny skies continue into this evening and into the early morning hours tomorrow. Clouds start to increase into your Sunday morning with the chance of a few showers between 6 am and noon. A few rumbles of thunder cannot be ruled out for your Sunday morning. After those showers move through the area, the winds will shift to be out of the north, beginning our nice cooldown. Temperatures will be in the mid to upper 80s once again for Sunday, the last day for temperatures this high for at least the next week or so.

Temperatures for the next week will be very pleasant and fall like. Temperatures sitting in the low 80s and upper 70s for highs for the next week or so are expected. Sunny conditions return over the next week, making for it to be a wonderful weather week! Low temperatures in the morning hours will be in the 50s for most of the week with a few of us seeing a few upper 40s work their way in towards midweek.

A bit farther away from home, the tropics are starting to heat up with Tropical Storm Ian continuing to organize and strengthen. Forecasts as of 4PM on Saturday are showing Ian becoming a major hurricane, up to category 4 strength. Everyone along the Gulf Coast should be weather aware for a possible landfalling hurricane mid to late next week. We will keep monitoring the situation and how it will or will not affect Western Alabama in the upcoming days. Below is the National Hurricane Center’s latest official track for Ian, showing it as a major hurricane entering the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday afternoon.

Hurricane Fiona is approaching eastern Canada.

A new tropical storm has formed in the far eastern Atlantic, with this one gaining the name Hermine.

Tropical Storm Gaston has formed in the North Atlantic on Tuesday, but this system will remain over open water.

Scattered Storms Return Sunday… Watching the Tropics… Thursday PM Forecast Update #alwx @wvua23

Good Thursday afternoon! Our local weather has been very hot on this first day of Fall. Tuscaloosa reached the upper 90s this afternoon, with most areas around central Alabama in the middle 90s today. A surface cold front is moving southward and will bring a push of drier and cooler air tonight and on Friday.

Temperatures will remain in the lower to middle 80s on Friday, which is closer to seasonal averages for late September. We can expect upper 50s Friday night!

Skies remain sunny on Saturday, with afternoon highs returning into the upper 80s. Clouds increase on Sunday, and a few scattered storms will become possible Sunday afternoon.

Hurricane Fiona is now a powerful category 4 hurricane, with winds at 130mph. Fiona will not impact the US, but it will get closer to Bermuda tonight.

Tropical Storm Gaston has formed in the North Atlantic on Tuesday, but this system will remain over open water.

We’re carefully watching a tropical wave in the southern Caribbean. This will likely become a tropical storm over the next day or two, then potentially a hurricane. Most data brings the storm into the Gulf early next week, but a trough nearby could turn the storm northeast over Florida by mid to late week. We’ll carefully monitor trends.

A Little Cooler on Friday… Watching the Tropics… Wednesday PM Forecast Update #alwx @wvua23

Good Wednesday afternoon! Our local weather has been very hot today, with many areas reaching the middle to upper 90s. Skies remain clear tonight, with an overnight low in the lower 70s.

Thursday is the first day of fall. We can expect more summer-like temperatures. Look for a sunny sky, with a high in the lower to middle 90s.

A surface front will arrive on Friday, sending temperatures in the lower or middle 80s for highs. We’ll dip into the 50s Friday night.

Hurricane Fiona is now a powerful category 4 hurricane, with winds at 130mph. Fiona will not impact the US.

Tropical Storm Gaston has formed in the North Atlantic yesterday, but this system will remain over open water.

I’m seeing lots of buzz on the new tropical system in the Atlantic. It is disorganized & hasn’t become a tropical depression or storm, yet. Models suggest strengthening likely next week, with some chance it ends up in the Gulf, however, it is too far out to know where and how strong it will become. We have lots of time to watch trends. If this becomes a threat to our area, I will give you as much notice as possible. What you can expect… Models will be all over the place over the next 5 days or so. By the weekend, we will have a much better understanding of where it will end up and how strong. Until then, let’s sit back and watch trends.
