There Goes the Sun… Tuscaloosa Sunset 6:20 PM Thursday

We just watched a gorgeous sunset with our Tuscaloosa towercam, looking west over downtown Tuscaloosa. After a cloudy start to the day, the sun finally made it out this afternoon and evening. Be sure to check the forecast below this post.

Great Weekend Ahead! Cold Air Next Week…Thursday Afternoon Update 4:15 PM

Good Thursday afternoon to you! After the morning storms, drier weather is returning this afternoon. Many of us are even picking up some nice sun this afternoon, but clouds are still pretty thick to the north and east of Tuscaloosa. We’ll stay dry for the rest of the afternoon and through the weekend before more changes arrive next week.

Temperatures have warmed into the middle 70s in many spots, but some places south of Demopolis have made it up to 80 degrees due to more sun. Skies will remain partly cloudy tonight, with lows in the lower 50s. Skies should clear enough to allow temperatures to cool off a bit. Temperatures will remain warm during the day and cool at night through the weekend. Highs will top out in the upper 70s on Friday, but lower 80s are possible on Saturday and Sunday. Lows at night will fall well down into the upper 40s for Saturday and Sunday mornings. With an area of high pressure overhead for the weekend, we can expect nice and sunny conditions. Dry air will also be in place, so humidity won’t be an issue.

A south flow takes over early next week, and clouds will increase on Monday and Tuesday. A cold front will move into the southeast on Tuesday. This will bring a good chance of showers and storms. Models are still looking iffy on the severe weather issue. At this point, I don’t see a major threat of severe weather locally, but some strong to severe storms may become possible along the front. Much colder air is set to arrive on Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures will top out in the 60s, with 30s at night by Thursday morning. The first widespread frost is possible by Thursday morning. We’ll have a good supply of sun on Thursday.

I have some good news for both the Alabama and Auburn football games on Saturday. Alabama is taking on Ole Miss in Oxford on Saturday. The 5pm kickoff will feature sunny skies, with temperatures in the lower 70s. Conditions will remain dry through the game, with upper 60s to wrap up the game. Auburn and Florida play in Auburn on Saturday. The kickoff for that game is at 6pm. Look for clear skies and nice conditions for the game. Temperatures will start in the lower 60s and end up in the lower 60s at the end of the game.

If you’re heading to the Shrimp Festival in Gulf Shores this weekend, look for very nice conditions. Highs will top out in the lower 80s, with 50s at night. Expect a mostly sunny sky along the coast all weekend.

Storms Increasing… Should start to move out around Lunch…. Wednesday Update 10am

Showers and storms are increasing in Pickens, Tuscaloosa and Fayette County this morning. They are pushing southeast now at about 35mph. Look for some lightning with this batch and some heavy rain for an hour or so. Much of west and central Alabama will get in on some rain, but not everyone will see that much. I think average rain totals will approach 1/4th of an inch before all the activity is over.  This will gradually move out after lunch. We’ll have an increase in sunshine later this afternoon as the cold front moves through the state.

Scattered Storms Early Today….Nice Weekend! Thursday Morning Update 9am

There are two batches of rain and storms working across our area this morning. One is down over Marengo, Hale and Perry County. The other batch is moving into Lamar and Marion County. The heavier rain and more intense lightning is in the cells over northern and central Marengo County. Look for a 20 to 30 minute window of heavy rain and lightning before it’s all over. This will happen for southern Hale, North and central Marengo and the southern half of Perry county over the next hour or two. The batch of rain to the northwest of Tuscaloosa is also moving east but is less intense. Light to moderate rain will continue to move into northwest Alabama and also won’t last very long. This will impact northern Pickens, all of Lamar, Marion, Fayette and Walker County.

Other than a few additional storms developing this morning in spots, look for increasing sunshine after lunch. Some of us are already seeing some sun, but skies will likely become mostly sunny after lunch and for the rest of the day. We can expect plenty of sun through the weekend, with warm days and cool nights.
