Nice Tonight, Very Hot Weather This Weekend – Tuesday Afternoon Forecast Discussion – 5:45pm

Good Tuesday afternoon to you! It’s turned out to be a nice day after a round of strong to severe storms moved through much of the area lastnight. Many spots picked up between 1/4th an inch and 2 inches. Some spots didn’t get any rain at all. The good news out of the deal lastnight was the lack of major damage. A few trees were blown down in spots, but there was no word of structural damage.

Skies have remained partly cloudy to mostly sunny over much of the area today, and skies will continue to clear out as the upper air low moves northeast. The upper level low will move into the Northeastern US, and a ridge will take its place by mid-week. With some dry air in place this afternoon and evening, it feels pretty nice outside. Lower dewpoints will allow temperatures to drop quickly after sunset. Look for temperatures to reach the middle 60s by 10pm tonight and middle 50s by daybreak tomorrow morning. The ridging is expected to nose in tomorrow afternoon, and temperatures will warm into the upper 80s across all of central and west Alabama.

As the upper air ridge really intensifies over our area, highs will warm into the lower 90s on Thursday and middle 90s on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Humidity will drastically increase on Friday and Saturday, so that will make conditions feel much like summer in time for your Memorial Day weekend. Overnight lows will modify into the lower 60s for Thursday morning and upper 60s each night through the weekend. Skies will remain mostly sunny over the next 7 days.

If you have beach plans to the Gulf Shores or Destin areas this holiday weekend, expect a good supply of sun and hot temperatures. Highs will reach the upper 80s, with lows near 70. There is little to no chance of rain along the coast this weekend.

Nice Today, Very Hot Later This Week and Weekend! Tuesday Morning Forecast Update 9:20am

Good Tuesday morning to you! After a bumpy night lastnight, the storms have moved out of Alabama now. We had several severe thunderstorm warnings across the area, but the storm’s bark was worse than the bite. There were a few trees down here and there, but the damage was very minor. The rain was welcome lastnight, but we could have done without the intense lightning.

Much of the state is sunny and nice this morning, but I’ll note the clouds developing over parts of north and east Alabama are spreading south. While much of the area is sunny now, don’t be shocked if clouds move in at some point this morning and early afternoon. This batch of clouds is in response to an upper air disturbance working over north Alabama. We can expect a mix of sun and clouds through the morning and afternoon hours for areas north and east of Tuscaloosa. Once the disturbance moves east of Alabama, the batch of clouds will move out as well. Areas south and west of Tuscaloosa will likely stay sunny to mostly sunny for the entire day.

The air will be a little drier today, tonight and on Wednesday. This dry air will allow temperatures to fall into the upper 50s tonight and quickly warm into the upper 80s on Wednesday. Skies will remain clear tonight and on Wednesday.

The chart above is the 500mb level off the GFS or Global Forecasting System, valid for Saturday morning. The core of the summer ridge is over northwest Alabama, with heights very high for this time of the year. This will feature temperatures in the lower to middle 90s across all of Alabama on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. While this map is valid for Saturday morning, the look will remain the same for the entire weekend. Also, higher moisture levels at the surface will move in and make for a muggy holiday weekend. Heat index values will easily reach the upper 90s on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Overnight lows will fall into the upper 60s over the weekend.

Storms Weakening…Strong Storms Moving South of I-20/59…Forecast Update… Dry Weather Tomorrow! – Tuesday Morning Update 1:25am

Good Morning! This batch of storms is finally starting to weaken a bit across central and west Alabama. A stray storm ahead of this complex may reach severe limits, but the risk is decreasing. The batch of storms is becoming a little more broken, and look for this trend to continue through daybreak. Some storms will reach HWY 80 between 2am and 4am, but they will be scattered to isolated.

Rain totals have been in the 1 to 2 inch range in many spots along and north of I-20/59, but areas south of the Interstate will likely pick up totals less than 1 inch. Some spots won’t get any rain south of the Interstate. All showers and storms will be out of central and west Alabama by sunrise this morning, but a stray shower is still possible through the day east of Interstate 65. The chance of rain there is very low after this batch of storms move out.

Some drier air will take over tomorrow, with highs in the lower 80s. Skies will become mostly sunny for our Tuesday and Wednesday. Lows will reach the upper 50s Wednesday morning, which will feel great! Hot weather takes over later this week and this weekend, with highs in the 90s by Thursday and Friday. Middle 90s are likely over the weekend. Moisture levels will increase, so conditions will feel very humid at times on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Look for mostly sunny conditions and dry weather for the rest of the week and into the holiday weekend.

Here’s the latest radar update. The line of strong to severe storms are moving over I-20/59 as of 1am. These storms are producing lots of lightning and gusty winds. There are a few reports of scattered trees down, especially in Jefferson County. After the heavy rain starts in your area, this activity will end in about an hour or less. The storms are starting to calm down a bit across much of the area, but high winds are likely in the storms over Jefferson County. Also, the batch of storms over Northern Greene and southwest Tuscaloosa County are producing strong, damaging winds.

If you’re driving this morning, take it easy on the roads if you have to drive through the storms. If you don’t have to drive, wait until the storms pass your area. I’m sure there will be some issues of roadway ponding tonight.
