Mild and Mostly Dry Weekend Ahead… Thursday Update – 4:30pm

Sevenday_640

Good Thursday afternoon! After a large complex of storms this morning, much of the afternoon has featured dry weather. The morning storms really helped to calm the atmosphere a bit, so it will be hard to get additional thunderstorms for the rest of the day. A weak cold front is moving in from the northwest, which will bring some lift into the area this evening. Ahead of the front, there is a small chance of a few scattered showers or storms. If it rains at your house this evening or tonight, it won’t last longer than an hour. Most areas will likely stay dry for the rest of the day and for tonight.

Here are some of our weather watcher storm totals since midnight lastnight:

Northport: 0.65″

Steve Rigsby – Jasper: 2.75″

Steven Ray – Fosters: 1.25″

Shelly Morgan – Hugo: 6.20″ – flash flooding reported there

Lisa Murphy-Edwards – Coaling: 1.00″

Kristopher Montgomery – Duncanville: 0.78″

Mack Langley – Linden: 2.00″

Adele Anderson – Myrtlewood: 2.31″

Birmingham – Airport: 0.17″

Tuscaloosa – Airport: 1.31″

Melissa McAteer – Gordo: 1.15″

Ronald Hughes – Coker: 1.40″

As the sun sets this evening, temperatures will fall into the 70s as early as 8pm. Once the air temperatures reaches the dewpoint, I would expect the risk of patchy fog late tonight. Especially in areas that picked up over an inch of rain this morning. Slightly drier air will take over by Friday, with a good supply of sun. I can’t rule out a stray shower or storm after lunch, but most of Alabama will stay dry. Saturday is looking very similar, with a good supply of sun and mostly dry weather. A passing shower is possible on Saturday, with only a 20% risk at any one spot. Highs will reach the upper 80s to around 90 on Friday and Saturday. Expect lows in the upper 60s Saturday morning, which will feel great!

The tropical wave, remnants of Chantal, will move into our area late Sunday and on Monday. We can expect a chance of scattered showers and storms. I don’t expect a total washout, but we need to keep the rain gear handy on Sunday and Monday. Rain chances are at 30% on Sunday and 40% on Monday. I may have to bump up the rain chances a bit on Monday, so keep an eye on any forecast changes.

We can expect a classic summer pattern for Tuesday through Thursday of next week. A stray shower or storm is possible, but most areas will stay dry. Temperatures will get rather hot, with highs in the upper 80s to around 90. Lows will warm into the lower 70s, as humidity returns to the area.

Soaking Rain Early This AM… Few Scattered Storms This PM, Then Dry… Thursday Forecast Update – 11:30am

Untitled

Good Thursday morning to you! As of  11:30am, rain was ending across most of Alabama. We’ve still got a few showers over southwest Alabama, but this is for areas south of Demopolis and Livingston. Over the next hour, these showers will die out or move south of Marengo and Sumter County. The MCS or complex of storms that moved through lastnight and early this morning was a bit of a surprise for many. We were watching the storms around Huntsville around 10pm yesterday, but the storms were in the process of dying out. During the overnight hours, they got an uptick in energy and really dumped some heavy rain over parts of Alabama. The heavier totals were over southwest Alabama, where there was a few flash flooding issues around sunrise. Weather watchers have reported totals over 6 inches across east Marengo County. We’ll have a list of reports later today…

For the rest of the day, expect temperatures to slowly rebound. The MCS really worked over the atmosphere, so I don’t expect another big round of rain this afternoon or evening. As a weak cold front moves into Alabama from the north, a few scattered or isolated storms will redevelop. The chance of rain for the rest of the day is at 50%. Any storms that develop for the rest of the day will be short lived.

We will go mostly dry for Friday and Saturday, as some drier air takes over north and central Alabama. A stray storm or two is still possible for areas south of I-20 on Friday and Saturday, but I don’t expect a weekend washout. Rain chances will increase to 40% on Sunday, as moisture levels increase. There’s a chance the remnants of Chantal will move into our area by Monday and Tuesday of next week. If this is the case, rain chances will really increase a bit for early next week. At this point, we have a risk of scattered showers and storms.
