Lots of Sun Ahead… Wednesday Afternoon Forecast Discussion – 4:45pm Update

Sevenday_640

Good Wednesday evening! After severe weather issues earlier this morning, conditions are becoming pretty quiet this afternoon and evening. As of 4:30 pm, a batch of showers were moving across parts of west and central Alabama, but most of us are starting to dry out. Conditions will continue to dry out later this evening and tonight. Skies are expected to become clear later tonight.

As cool air replaces the warm air, look for temperatures to fall into the upper 40s after 7 pm and upper 30s after 10 pm. It’s going to be a pretty chilly night across west and central Alabama. Temperatures will dip below average highs on Thursday and Friday. Highs will reach the lower 50s on Thursday and upper 40s on Friday. A reinforcing shot of cooler air will move in on Friday, which explains the decrease in temperatures for that day.

The upper air trough will retreat east over the weekend. A disturbance will move into Alabama on Saturday, so we’ve included a 20% chance of a passing shower or two. The risk of rain is low due to little moisture in the atmosphere. Highs will top out in the upper 50s on Saturday, so there’s no threat of wintry weather with that system. As the disturbance moves out early Sunday morning, skies will quickly become sunny through the day.

Temperatures will start to reach the lower 60s for highs first thing next week, with skies remaining mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Overnight lows will warm into the lower 40s at night next week. At this point, I don’t expect any additional rain to start off next week, as our pattern dries just a bit.

Rain Is Ending…Cool Air Is Back… Wednesday Update – 2:45pm

Warnings_59

Good Wednesday afternoon! As of 2:45pm, all severe weather issues were in the state of Georgia; in-fact, things have been pretty quiet over the past several hours across all of west and central Alabama. While it has rained a lot this morning, the severe weather issues didn’t last long early this morning. All we’re left with this afternoon is a cool rain across the eastern half of Alabama.

As of 2:45pm, rain has ended for the most part across much of west Alabama. A little drizzle is possible through 4pm in west Alabama, but that won’t amount to much at all. Areas near and east of I-65 will see the steady rain end a little later this afternoon. The back edge of the rain should work into Georgia by 4 or 5pm.

I’ll admit, I didn’t expect this much rain across west and central Alabama. The rain moved through slower than expected, the reason we got a big soaking. While there were a few flash flooding issues, I haven’t heard of anything major in terms of flooding at this time.

As of severe weather issues from this morning, it sure seems like much of west and central Alabama was spared any major issues. That being said, there was significant wind damage reported across parts of Fayette, Walker and Winston County. It was the classic winter time system, where a little more instability would have caused a major problem across all of our area. Fortunately, instability was lacking a bit, which caused issues to be more isolated. We had several tornado warnings, but I have not heard of any confirmed reports of a tornado touchdown in our area at this time.

Check out this video from the Adairsville, Georgia area. Notice how a little more instability can turn into a bad situation…

Severe Weather Issues Ending Fast… Wednesday Update 8:50 am

Untitled

Good Wednesday morning! As of 8:50am, severe weather issues have ended for most of west Alabama. While rain is still falling over much of west Alabama at this time, the severe threat is on the leading edge of the rain. As of 8:50am, the damaging wind portion of the storms were located in a line from Birmingham to Brent to Marion to Linden. Areas west of this line will have no issues with severe weather for the rest of the day.

If you live east of the cities listed above, you’ve got a risk of isolated wind damage or a quick spin-up tornado between 9am and 11am. You can see the map above, where I’ve noted the area of possible severe weather issues for the rest of the morning. The line will reach Montgomery by 11am.

Severe Weather Risk is Ending in West Alabama… Wednesday Update 6:30am

BB224_lCEAA1cVk

Good Wednesday morning! Other than a couple of tornado warnings and severe thunderstorm warnings, we haven’t had that much damage being reported across Alabama so far. The main area of wind damage we picked up was over Fayette and Winston County. Even where we had a couple of tornado warnings, I haven’t heard of any tornado damage.

Good news… The severe weather risk has ended over extreme west Alabama. The leading edge of the storms have passed Tuscaloosa and Jasper as of 6:30am. The storms are weakening at this time. There’s still a chance a storm or two could reach severe limits between now and 9am across west and central Alabama. Strong winds will be the main issue.

As of 6:30am, rain is falling over much of west Alabama, but the severe weather risk has moved east of Jasper, Tuscaloosa and Livingston. The severe risk will end for the Birmingham, Centreville to Linden areas by 8am. All severe weather issues should be in Georgia by 10 or 11am.

Once the leading edge of the storms reaches your house, the severe risk will end within an hour. After that, you’ll be left with some rain for an hour or two.
