Lots of Rain…Some Severe Weather/Flash Flooding…Tuesday Morning Update 4am

Good Tuesday morning! As of 4am, we’ve got several severe thunderstorm warnings and several flash flood warnings. It’s a mess across central and west Alabama to say the least, with two batches of severe storms at this hour. The first batch has produced lots of wind damage over parts of our area from the Hamilton area to Jasper to Birmingham, and to Montgomery. Lots of flash flooding issues have been reported in Jefferson and Shelby County, where nearly 4 inches of rain fell in an hour or two. While the severe storms with the first batch is around Montgomery, lots of moderate rain stretches back to the north and to the west. Rain is falling moderate to heavy across much of central and west Alabama, which is something much needed. There’s also a lot of lightning out there.

The second batch of severe storms is moving through Walker County now. Some of the hard hit areas a few hours ago are getting it again at this hour. Gusty winds, intense lightning and very heavy rain is falling over much of northwest Alabama. This batch is working to the south southeast and will impact much of the same areas that got the first round.

The risk of severe weather is starting to die off a bit, but the risk of damaging winds is still possible ahead of this second batch, so keep in mind severe weather safety. I do not expect an issue with tornadoes tonight/today. Showers and storms will continue through the morning hours on this Tuesday. Much of central and west Alabama will get some much needed rain over the next 6 hours. While we are getting lots of rain, there are some isolated flash flooding issues, so keep an eye out if you’re driving early this morning. If you come across a flooded road, turn around.

It will not rain all morning, but parts of the area will get a good solid rain for a few hours. Other spots won’t get so lucky and will miss out on the good rain amounts. Much of southwest Alabama hasn’t picked up a drop so far. If you haven’t got any rain so far, think you stand a good chance of picking up rain today. If you wake up and it’s pouring, it won’t last all day. Showers and storms will come and go through the morning.

Rain chances will decrease on Wednesday.
