Wednesday Morning Thoughts on Severe Risk Thursday AM… #alwx @wvua23

Good Wednesday morning! Here’s a quick update on the risk of strong to perhaps a few severe storms Thursday morning.

Above is a graphic that shows the time-line and risk areas on a map, so check that for your specific area.

A line of strong to possibly a few severe storms will reach the west Alabama state line close to 4am Thursday morning. The line will be slowly weakening as it progresses east across our area Thursday morning. The strong leading edge of the storms will likely be approaching I-65 by 10am, then reaching the Georgia state line around midday. Rain will continue for a few hours after the intense part of the line passes your area, but any severe issues in one spot will be very short lived, less than 30 minutes.

The main risk of storms becoming severe along the line will be to the south of Demopolis/Selma/Montgomery, but there is a low end risk as far north as the Tennessee state line. In terms of what type of severe weather… I expect the main risk to be in the form of strong gusty winds with the leading edge of the line. The tornado risk is very low, but I can’t rule out an isolated spin-up, especially south of HWY 80. Technically, all of our area is in risk for an isolated tornado, but the chance of anything spinning up north of Demopolis/Selma/Montgomery is low due to very limited surface based instability. If that thought changes, I’ll reflect that in future updates.

We will have updates on social media as well as the weather blog. Go to and click weather and select weather blog. Facebook: WVUA23RichardScott Twitter: @RichardWVUA23
If we have a tornado warning in our coverage area, we will go on air and online non-stop. If a tornado watch is issued, expect top and bottom of the hour cutins on TV and online.
