Thoughts on Strong to Severe Storms Thursday… Tuesday Afternoon Update #alwx @wvua23

DMA Severe Risk 2.pngGood Tuesday afternoon! We’re about to move into our fall tornado season, and just in time, we’re looking at a risk of strong to severe storms.

A sharp shortwave trough will help to kick off a deepening surface low northwest of Alabama Wednesday night into Thursday. This will pull deep tropical moisture northward into Alabama and help to increase uplift and wind shear over our area.

A line of storms will move into far west Alabama around 5am Thursday morning, then shift east through the morning. The leading edge of the line of storms will pass through Cullman, Jasper, Tuscaloosa, Demoplis areas between 7am and 10am. Storms will impact east Alabama, east of I-65 between 10am and 2pm, as they continue the east path across our area. Keep in mind, rain will continue for several hours after the strong to severe part of the line has passed east of you.

In terms of the risk types, I expect a chance of damaging winds and possibly some flooding with the line. There is a low end tornado risk, especially south of I-20 where instability will be higher.

Rain amounts will range from 1-2 inches for most of central Alabama, but there appears to be a hot spot where rain amounts could exceed 2 to 3″ over west Alabama to the south of Vernon and Fayette. Rain amounts will be a tad lower the further east you go towards the Georgia boarder.
