Soaking Rain Today & Tonight, & Breezy… Monday AM Update 8am #alwx @wvua23

No automatic alt text available.

Good Monday morning! I’m seeing a lot of really bad information being shared with the approach of now Tropical Storm Irma. Please be careful where you get information. At 8am, the center of Tropical Storm Irma is located over north central Florida and moving north northwest. Winds continue to decrease now that the center is inland and has been since yesterday afternoon. At 8am, sustained winds where at 70mph.

The latest track moves the center over the Auburn area at 2am Tuesday morning to a point near Muscle Shoals Tuesday afternoon. As the center moves into the Auburn area, winds will be down to 40mph with the weakening storm, then down to 20mph as a tropical depression once reaching Muscle Shoals Tuesday afternoon.

Above is a graphic showing the maximum wind gust expected for west and central and east Alabama during this event, which will likely happen later this afternoon and tonight, with breezy conditions really dropping off early Tuesday morning. Wind gusts up to 35mph are possible for areas west of I-65, across all of west AL. Understand, we see winds like this common behind winter cold fronts. Power outages are unlikely in west Alabama. East Alabama, for areas east of I-65, winds could gust up to 50mph. Winds like that could bring a few trees down and create some power outages this afternoon into tonight, mainly closer to the Georgia boarder.

By sunrise Tuesday morning, the heavier rain will be moving out and winds will be just a little breezy, with winds of 20mph across the area, with light rain breaking into spotty showers by Tuesday afternoon. Rain amounts of 1-3″ will be likely for our area, but rain will fall in a steady rate over a period of several hours today and tonight, so flooding is unlikely.
