Very Hot Thursday… Storms on Friday… Wednesday Forecast Update – 4:30pm #alwx @wvua23

Good Wednesday afternoon! Today was an incredible example of the nature of scattered storms this time of the year. There was a serious flash flood right over Hoover and Vestavia Hills this afternoon, yet it did not rain a drop at downtown Birmingham. Given the slow motion of the isolated storms that managed to develop in the afternoon heating process and the high level of atmospheric moisture, storms dropped really heavy rain in a few spots, while others remain hot and dry. The risk of isolated storms will diminish this evening, with warm and humid conditions overnight.

A heat advisory has been issued for our area on Thursday, due to the high level of heat and humidity. Heat index will likely rise over 105 during the afternoon. The risk of an isolated shower is low, but can’t be ruled out.

A surface front will approach Alabama by Friday night and early Saturday, bringing a risk of scattered storms during the afternoon on Friday and into Friday night. With lots of tropical moisture available for storms to work with Friday afternoon into Friday night, there could be isolated flash flooding issues. Some storms could pack a punch as they pass through, with gusty winds, heavy rain and intense lightning.

The best chance of dealing with a passing storm on Saturday will be south of I-20, as the surface front moves through the area. Models agree on a drier airmass, with lower humidity on Sunday and Monday. Highs will top out in the upper 80s, with lows well down into the 60s Saturday night and Sunday night.
