12pm Thursday Update: Rain & Storms Continue… Isolated Tornadoes Possible…

At midday on this Thursday, we continue to deal with rain bands circulating around what is now Tropical Depression Cindy. Cindy made landfall early this morning and has been downgraded. With very deep tropical moisture across Alabama, I expect storms to dump really heavy rain in a short period of time. The National Weather Service maintains a flash flood watch for much of central and west Alabama. There will be breaks in the rain, with the activity expected to become more scattered by this evening.

There is also the risk of a few isolated tornadoes, as is the case with any landfalling tropical systems. Typically, the tornadoes associated with a system like this are EF-0s or EF-1s, so I don’t expect a risk of strong tornadoes. Either way, I still want you to be alert this afternoon, as a small spin-up tornado can still pose a risk to life and property. There is a tornado watch for areas south of Tuscaloosa and west of I-65. The watch will likely be expanded north soon. This current tornado watch expires at 1pm, but a new one will replace the old one…

A few isolated tornadoes will remain possible on Friday as well, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours.
