Some Storms Ahead.. Wednesday Forecast Update – 4pm #alwx @wvua23

Good Wednesday afternoon! Upper level ridging is baking us across west and central Alabama this afternoon, with air temperatures approaching 90 and heat index between 92 and 98. An isolated shower or storm is possible before 9pm, but the risk of rain for any one spot is very low. Temperatures will gradually cool into the lower 70s overnight. Given high dewpoints, the mugginess will be high through tonight.

Thursday, we’ll be watching storms develop to our northwest. With a northwest flow aloft and an approaching surface front, I expect a good chance of storms to pass through the area. While there is a high rain chance on Thursday, it will not rain all day. Our high resolution computer model data suggests a MCS type of feature may move through the area bringing a brief period of heavy rain, gusty winds and intense lightning. It may rain for an hour or two at your house before storms move on.

With a nearby frontal boundary and plenty of tropical moisture, a few scattered storms will remain possible on Friday. The risk of rain is at 50% on Friday, so it will be a day with hit or miss storms. The risk of scattered, mainly afternoon storms will continue through Father’s Day weekend, but I do not expect an all day type of rain; in-fact, some spots will totally miss out on the random scattered storms. Highs will approach 90 on Saturday and Sunday, with a heat index in the middle 90s.
