Strong to Severe Storms Later Today/Tonight… 8am Sunday Update #alwx @wvua23

Good Sunday morning! At 8am, a line of severe storms across west Mississippi is slowly moving east. A tornado watch has been issued for all of central Mississippi up to the state line. The Storm Prediction Center has placed all of our area in atleast some sort of severe weather risk. Above is the latest outlook. There is now an enhanced risk for areas south of Tuscaloosa and west of Greensboro, Marion and Camden. Basically much of southwest Alabama is in an enhanced risk of severe weather this afternoon into tonight, with much of central and north Alabama under a slight risk.

At 8am, there are numerous tornado warnings along a line of storms with multiple spin-ups happening across western Mississippi. There are reports of tornado touchdowns over west Mississippi. Storms will slowly creep eastward, reaching west Alabama around 1pm. Given the high level of instability and modest amount of wind shear, we’ll be on the look out for a few spin-up tornadoes along the line of storms this afternoon, especially over west Alabama. Storms will also produce very heavy rain and some flash flooding will be possible. Rain amounts of 1 to 3 inches appear likely.

The first round of storms will likely dissipate somewhere near I-65 by late afternoon or into the early evening hours. Models suggest another round of strong to severe storms will develop over east Mississippi and west Alabama later this evening and tonight, then very slowly move east. Storms this evening and tonight will be capable of producing very heavy rain, intense lightning, strong winds and a few isolated tornadoes. Storms will slowly end from west to east likely after midnight tonight. It may be closer to sunrise tomorrow morning before storms end in east Alabama.

The bottom line… There will be several rounds of rain and storms today and tonight. Make sure you have a way to receive warnings. If there is a tornado warning issued, you can join us live on WVUA and online at, click weather and select the live severe weather option.
