Warmer Days Ahead… Storms on Thursday… Monday Update – 4:05pm #alwx @wvua23

Good Monday afternoon! Our local weather has turned out nice and mostly sunny this late afternoon, as drier air finally filters out some of the morning overcast. Temperatures in most spots have reached the low 70s. Expect skies to remain clear overnight, with a low in the lower 50s.

Tuesday will start the warming trend, with a high in the low 80s. Skies will remain sunny on Tuesday, becoming partly cloudy as moisture increases on Wednesday. Highs will approach the middle 80s on Wednesday, but rain is not expected despite the increase in moisture.

A shortwave upper air trough will spark the development of a surface low northwest of Alabama Wednesday night, with showers and storms becoming likely along the front to our west. After midnight Wednesday night, storms will approach west Alabama. Some storms may become strong to severe. The risk of severe weather appears rather limited, but we’ll need to keep an eye on it Thursday morning. By Thursday afternoon, storms should be exiting Alabama into Georgia. Below is a look at the general area where an isolated storm or two may become severe Thursday morning.

There’s no cold air behind this system, in-fact, it will get much warmer on Friday and Saturday, as upper 80s become likely. High dewpoints will create very high levels of instability over the southeast, which leads us to the next system to arrive by Sunday or Sunday night. Models agree a vigorous upper air trough and deepening surface low should kick off to the west of Alabama, sending a cold front through the state sometime Sunday night or Monday morning. Current model data is concerning with the potential for severe storms across west and central Alabama, but it’s still too early to determine if there will be a risk and what time. Keep checking back with us as we get a bit closer to the event.
