Mild Now… Rain Ahead & Chilly Temps Ahead… Thursday Forecast Update – 4pm #alwx @wvua23

Good Thursday afternoon! Our local weather has turned out amazing this afternoon, with most areas reaching the upper 70s. After a sunny start to the day, clouds are gradually increasing across the area as of 4pm. Expect skies to become cloudy this evening and tonight. Temperatures will remain very mild overnight,  with lows in the lower 60s.

A cluster of severe storms will develop northwest of Alabama this evening and move into northwest Alabama after midnight tonight. Storms will be capable of producing damaging winds in isolated spots between 2am and 6am, but the main risk of damaging wind gusts will happen to the north of I-20. Storms will slide south of our area by mid morning Friday, with an increase in sunshine by afternoon.

Most of Saturday appears dry, as models have slowed the progression of the weekend rain event. It appears Saturday evening through midday Sunday will be the window for a big soaker across Alabama. I have been flooded with questions about snow this weekend in our area. I’m not really sure who forecasted snow or where the snow rumors came from, but the data I’m looking at and the data you can see for yourself below doesn’t have any snow in our area; in-fact, the model capture below suggests any snow will be over Tennessee and points northeast, with just a soaking rain across central Alabama. Wherever or whoever you saw forecasted snow, I wouldn’t really focus on that. The data I see does not support that idea. If you get your hopes up for snow in central Alabama this weekend, you’ll likely be disappointed.

Regional RPM 12km

Expect a chilly Sunday, with highs in the low to middle 50s. Temperatures will start off Saturday morning, Sunday morning, Monday morning and Tuesday morning in the middle to upper 30s. Daytime highs will approach 60 on Monday, then fall into the middle or upper 50s for highs on Tuesday and Wednesday. There is a good potential for a freeze and frost Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.
