Some Flooding Possible & An Isolated Strong to Severe Storm Today – Thursday Update – 8am #alwx @wvua23

At 8am, very heavy rain and storms are developing across Mississippi, spreading towards west Alabama. There was actually a confirmed tornado near Raleigh, Mississippi at 8am. We’ll have to watch radar trends carefully today, as the environment is marginally conducive to produce a few strong storms and perhaps an isolated severe storm or two. I’m concerned the flooding risk may be increasing for Alabama. Looking at radar trends to our west and the ongoing flash flooding across portions of central Mississippi, we could have some isolated flash flood issues later today and into early tonight across portions of west and central Alabama.

At 8am, light rain is spreading into west Alabama. As the upper air support really increases today, rain will become heavy over west Alabama by late morning and into the early afternoon, slowly spreading eastward through the afternoon and evening. Rain amounts of 1 to 3 inches appear likely today into early tonight. Any organized storms that develop this afternoon and evening could become strong and produce gusty winds. I can’t rule out an isolated tornado somewhere across west or central Alabama during this event, but the risk is low at this time. 11am today through midnight tonight appears to be the window of opportunity if anything can become severe… Again, our main issue today will be heavy rain.
