Radar Update…Severe Storms Approaching State Line…5:20 p.m.

A few isolated showers in central Alabama right now; however, that will change in the next few hours. Numerous, very strong storms are currently tracking through east Mississippi and are making aim for the state line. Right now conditions are more than favorable to keep the numerous cells going.

Today will be much more different from yesterday. Yesterday yielded strong winds but with little CAPE available, no tornadoes developed. That’s different today. We have more than prime conditions here, especially further north in northwest Alabama.

Should those warnings move into Alabama, we will be covering the storms live on WVUA 23 News. If you can not catch us on the tv, you can find our live stream online at WVUA23.com, just look under the weather tab for the option “Weather Live Stream.”

3:30pm Tuesday Severe Weather Update #alwx @wvua23

gss.png

At 3:30pm, supercell storms are developing across much of central and west Mississippi. Some of these may move into northwest Alabama sometime after 5pm this evening. This would be in the pink shade on the map above in areas around Reform, Vernon, Fayette, Hamilton and Halevyville. In the zone on the map in pink above is the best chance of dealing with large hail, damaging winds and a few tornadoes.

Areas in the orange shade around Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Jasper, Cullman, Demopolis, Clanton, Centreville will deal with a risk of severe storms overnight, but the risk will be a little lower and will be later tonight. I still expect the risk of damaging winds and isolated tornadoes in the area shaded in orange tonight, so remain alert. Our main issue in the orange shaded area will be in the form of a late night squall line. If cells can develop ahead of the line, they stand the best chance of producing a tornado. The line will very slowly move eastward through the late night hours across west and central Alabama. It could be after sunrise before the rain ends in some areas…

This is going to be mainly an overnight event for Alabama. The risk of severe storms will begin as early as 6pm over northwest Alabama in the areas shaded in pink. In the areas shaded in orange, the main risk of storms becoming severe will be from 10pm through 8am.

It is very important to have a source such as a NOAA weather radio to wake you up if your area is issued under a tornado warning. You can then turn on the TV or pull up our coverage on your smart phone or computer. Info on that below…
