Hot Now… Cooler on Friday… Tuesday Forecast Update – 3:50pm #alwx @wvua23

Good Tuesday afternoon! Our local weather has turned out hot this afternoon, with much of central and west Alabama approaching record highs for this time of the year. At 4pm, temperatures are generally in the upper 80s to near 90 across our area. Expect a slow drop in temperatures this evening, with upper 60s for lows tonight. As moisture increases, expect clouds to expand in coverage tonight.

A low level flow off the Gulf will keep skies partly sunny on Wednesday. I can’t rule out a stray shower somewhere over west AL, but widespread rain is not expected Wednesday. Highs will approach 90 over west Alabama and upper 80s in east Alabama. Most of our area will again reach the record highs for this time of the year.

A cold front will move into Alabama Thursday afternoon, with a batch of scattered showers and storms along the front during the mid to late afternoon hours. Unfortunately, this system will only produce a thin line of showers and storms. Rain amounts will be generally at or less than 0.25″, which is not enough to reduce drought conditions. Given there will be limited surface based instability and little wind shear, severe weather is unlikely. There could be some thunder associated with the heavier downpours. Looking into the long range, I don’t see any signs of additional rain until sometime around Halloween weekend. Drought conditions will likely continue to get worse through the end of October.

Expect a nice shot of cooler air on Friday, with highs dropping back into the lower 70s on Friday and Saturday. Overnight lows will fall into the lower to middle 40s Friday night and Saturday night. With a surface high over our area on Saturday and Sunday, our weekend forecast will include sunny conditions and dry air.

In the tropics, a new system developing east of the Bahamas may become a tropical storm in the next few days. This system will not impact the US, as it’s swept out to sea ahead of our next trough.
