Humid Days… Scattered Storms… Friday Forecast Update – 4pm #alwx @wvua23

7 Day Forecast - Offset Lows - PM.png

Good Friday afternoon! Our local weather will be changing in the next few days, as upper air ridging builds away from Alabama and we get stuck under an unsettled pattern. There are a few storms across Alabama this afternoon, generally moving from north to the south. These storms will gradually diminish after sunset, as the air becomes more stable. Temperatures will drop into the 70s overnight, with a partly cloudy sky.

The weekend forecast will include increasing rain chances. I do not expect it to rain all weekend, and some spots may miss out on the rain. As a weak upper air trough axis slides in from the north, that will help to setup rising motion over Alabama and get a better number of storms to develop. The best chance of storms will arrive Saturday afternoon and may continue through midnight Saturday night. More storms are expected on Sunday, especially during the afternoon hours. Again, these storms will be scattered, so some areas get a downpour and some areas do not. That’s the nature of these summer time storms. Fortunately, the setup includes a higher coverage of storms, so that should help with drought conditions.

Next week is an interesting setup for sure. Monday through Friday looks to be wet at times across portions of Alabama. Models develop a weak surface low in the northeast Gulf and slowly track the system to the west or northwest. While it may or may not develop into a tropical storm, the system will dump tons of rain over the southeast, especially near the Gulf Coast. Flooding may become a real concern for areas across south Alabama and Florida. We’ll update the forecast as we get closer..
