Watching Tropics… Bonnie Soon? Thursday Update – 9am #alwx @wvua23

Good Thursday morning! I just wanted to post a quick update on the tropics, as Memorial Day Weekend fast approaches. We are watching a tropical low become better organized to the northeast of the Bahamas. This system is moving northwest, directly towards the southeast Atlantic coastline. Expect some problems this weekend for coastal sections of north Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina at times this holiday weekend.

What to expect: The National Hurricane Center now has a high risk of this becoming Tropical Storm Bonnie on Friday or Saturday, as it approaches the southeast US coastline. The environment is becoming more favorable for development, however, water temperatures are too cool for rapid development or for this to become a strong system. At most, this will become a weak to moderate tropical storm, with a small area of tropical storm winds. This will become a rainy weekend at times for some coastal areas from northern Florida to North Carolina. Despite the hype you may hear on the news or some online sources, this system will not be a big deal in respects to wind. However, if you plan on going to the beaches in the areas mentioned above, be very careful for an increase in rip current risk and larger waves.

This system will NOT get into the Gulf of Mexico, so if you have plans to travel to the Gulf Coast for the holiday weekend, enjoy!
