Extreme Cold Tonight… Rain Next Week… Wednesday Forecast Update – 4:25pm #alwx

Good Wednesday afternoon! A strong cold front has passed through the area, and winds are gusting as high as 25mph behind the front. Temperatures are starting to fall across west and central Alabama; in-fact, expect a rapid drop in temperatures as we reach the sunset time. On average, temperatures will drop into the middle 20s as early as 7pm, then upper teens as early as midnight. Wind chill values are already well below freezing, and these values will approach 0 at times tonight! Please bring the pets in tonight! If you know of anyone without a source of heat, please check on them during the overnight and help if possible. While it’s January, and cold like this happens, it has been a while since we’ve seen temperatures near this cold. Skies will gradually clear out overnight.

A large number of schools have delayed the start off classes in the morning. For the I-20 area, expect temperatures between 12 and 14 at 7am Thursday morning, gradually warming to the upper teens at 9am, then the middle 20s at noon. Areas north of I-20 will be a few degrees colder and areas south of I-20 will be a few degrees warmer. Expect lots of sun on Thursday, with a high near or just below freezing.

Clouds will increase on Friday, ahead of a second push of cold air. Forecast models have trended drier on Friday, so we’ve taken out the risk of a few flurries. Highs will approach 40 on Friday and Saturday. Clouds really start to increase on Sunday and Monday, ahead of our next slow moving rain maker. Expect an isolated shower or two on Sunday, but the higher rain chances will be coming in on Monday and Tuesday. It sure looks like we’ll experience a wet few days to start off next week, but temperatures will be warm enough to prevent winter weather issues around here..
