Rain Continues; Flash Flooding in Jackson, MS (9:40AM 4/14/14 Update)

Rain with a few isolated thunderstorms continue this morning across central Alabama. Right now, the leading edge of rain and storms is approaching Montgomery and Alexander City. We note there have been a few lightning strikes in southeastern Chilton and northwestern Elmore counties.

The big story right now is the heavy rain/flash flood situation… Right now, the entirety of the Jackson, Mississippi metro area is under a flash flood warning. The above image shows the Birmingham NEXRAD weather radar (KBMX) with the current flash flood warnings in Mississippi.

Below is a look at the Storm Total Precipitation product from the NEXRAD near Jackson, MS. Areas of yellow and orange on the map are indicative of 2.5 to 3 inches of accumulated rainfall in the past several hours. The additional rainfall, coupled with the fact that the ground in AL/MS is still quite saturated from the rain/storms last week, is only going to exacerbate flooding of  creeks and streams.
