Rain Chances Drop… Temps Below Normal… Tuesday Forecast Update – 4pm

Good Tuesday afternoon! Much of Alabama is dealing with scattered showers and storms this afternoon, but rain is on and off for many. The heavier rain remains over deep south Alabama, where areas south of HWY 80 are dealing with intense lightning, heavy rain and isolated flash flooding. Storms north of HWY 80 are a little more scattered. Expect the risk of a downpour or two through this evening, as a cold front moves in from the northwest. Storms motion is from northwest to southeast.

Rain chances will gradually thin out after 10pm tonight, with only isolated showers and storms after the 10pm hour. Look for lows to reach the lower 70s late tonight. Drier air will take over the state from north to south on Wednesday. There is still a chance of scattered storms, but the best chance will happen near and south of I-20. Rain chances on Wednesday stand at 40%. Highs will top out in the upper 80s on Wednesday and Thursday. As drier and cooler air take over Wednesday night, lows will drop into the middle to upper 60s! This will be well below normal for August… Rain chances remain low on Thursday and Friday, but a stray shower or storm is possible south of I-20. Highs will continue in the upper 80s.

As for the weekend… Rain chances will increase to 40%, but I don’t expect an all day or night type of rain. The upper air trough will back westward a bit and allow tropical moisture and showers to return into Alabama. The forecast will really depend on what happens with a tropical wave or low over the Gulf. Some models show a batch of clouds and rain moving into Alabama on Saturday and Sunday. I think the best chance of rain will occur east of I-65, but some forecasting changes are possible. There is a small chance this system could become a weak tropical storm, but most models keep it very weak. We’ll keep an eye on it.

Tropical moisture will hang around through early next week, with the chance of scattered showers and storms.

The weekend beach forecast will include a chance of scattered to numerous showers and storms. It won’t rain all day at the beach, but it may rain from time to time along Alabama’s Gulf Coast…
