8:20 PM – Saturday 4/27/13 Evening Forecast Update…

On this evening of 4/27/13, we can be thankful we are not dealing with the massive tornado outbreak we dealt with 2 years ago today. We have had a few severe storms earlier this afternoon in far west Alabama, but that activity has diminished. Most of the thunderstorm activity remains northeast of our area, over parts of southern Cullman County stretching eastward into northeast Alabama. The National Weather Service has dropped Marion, Fayette, Lamar, Pickens, and Tuscaloosa Counties from the severe thunderstorm watch as no severe weather is expected in these areas for the next several hours.

However, we are watching thunderstorms developing over southeastern Arkansas nearing the Mississippi river. These storms are along and just ahead of a surface frontal boundary. A tornado watch remains in effect for northwestern Mississippi until 11 PM this evening. It’s unlikely that this watch will be shifted eastward into our area overnight tonight, but we will be watching these storms closely. It’s more probable that these storms will weaken as they near Alabama overnight tonight, but in the event they maintain their intensity, a few strong storms are possible capable of producing gusty winds and hail.

As this front moves into our area for Sunday, expect showers and thunderstorms to re-intensify throughout the day. As we get into the afternoon hours, a few storms may become strong to possibly severe with hail or gusty winds the primary threat. This shower and storm activity is expected to slowly shift southeast through the day, clearing west Alabama by tomorrow night. We should see the return to some sunshine and low 80s for your Monday and Tuesday, which will give us a chance to dry out from the weekend rains.

An unsettled weather pattern is looking likely to set up for the latter half of the week into the weekend. Expect some scattered showers and storms for Wednesday and Thursday, but I don’t think it rains everywhere. Rain chances continue Friday and may increase toward Saturday as a closed upper-level low inches closer to our area from the west. However, overall confidence in the forecast for the latter half of the week is not all that high, so some changes are certainly possible, so stay tuned!

Saturday 4:30 PM Weather Update..

ww0141_radar_big

A tornado watch is in effect until 11 PM CDT for north Mississippi into southwestern Tennessee. Here in ths region, it appears a more favorable combination of shear and instability will promote the threat for more organized storms including the potential for an isolated tornado.

The airmass over eastern Mississippi into northwestern sections of Alabama is becoming unstable this afternoon as well. Thunderstorms have been developing in this unstable zone over the past several hours, but over the last hour, they have begun to show signs of intensification. A severe thunderstorm warning remains in effect for Neshoba and Winston Counties, MS until 5 PM this afternoon. A severe thunderstorm warning also remains in effect for Colbert and Franklin Counties in AL until 445 PM this afternoon.

Other storms are increasing over far western Alabama as well. We will be watching these storms closely as they move northeastward. Some strong storms are possible, but for now the overall severe weather threat looks low with these storms.

We will continue to monitor the weather situation throughout the evening
