Warm Weekend Ahead! Storms on Monday… Thursday Forecast Update – 4:30 pm
December 6, 2012 Leave a comment
Good Thursday afternoon to you! How about a very nice weather day, with mild temperatures and a partly sunny sky. Temperatures reached the lower to middle 70s across all of west and central Alabama today. While conditions are forecasted to remain mild through the weekend, a sharp upper air trough will bring some big changes next week.
There are some changes expected for parts of Alabama tomorrow, due to a cool air wedge. A sliver of chilly air is moving southwest, along the east side of the Appalachian Mountains. Since the cool air is very shallow and can’t go over the mountains, it’s forced southwest. Temperatures will struggle to reach 60 east of I-65 on Friday, but everyone west of I-65 will warm into the lower 70s. Skies will remain partly sunny in west Alabama, but a few extra clouds are expected over east Alabama.
The risk is low on Friday, but a light sprinkle can’t be ruled out. If you have outdoor plans over the weekend, the forecast is looking nice for the most part. A stray shower or two is possible on Saturday and Sunday, but the risk of rain is pretty low. Even if a shower develops over your area, it won’t last long at all. Temperatures will remain mild and dewpoint will remain high through Sunday. This means it will be mild and muggy on Saturday and Sunday.
A sharp cold front will pass through Alabama on Monday. The front arrival time has slowed a tad, so temperatures may be able to reach the lower 60s in the morning, and then fall into the 50s and 40s through the afternoon. Look for a good chance of rain and storms on Monday, with the risk of a strong to severe storm. The chance of organized severe weather looks very low for now. If any changes happen, we’ll update the forecast. Look for rain totals between 0.50″ and 1 inch. Rain is expected to move out Monday evening. Temperatures will rapidly decrease behind the front, with middle to lower 30s Monday night and middle to upper 20s Tuesday night. Highs will struggle to reach 50 on Tuesday.
The forecast gets very complicated for the rest of next week, as a southwest flow develops over Alabama. There’s some hint of a surface low forming in the Gulf and spreading rain in here on Wednesday or Thursday. If model data comes into agreement then rain may need to be added to the forecast by mid to late week. If it were January or February, then we could be talking some winter weather.
