Warm Weather Ahead… Friday Afternoon Forecast Discussion – 4:40 PM

A good Friday to you! After a cold start to the day, temperatures stayed cool through this afternoon. Despite the sun, temperatures couldn’t recover that well, as the cold airmass continues to cover much of the east and south. The upper air trough will move out of the deep south this weekend, so temperatures will start a warming trend.

Before we get there, the arctic high is settling right across the south today. This will bring a calm wind and clear skies tonight. Dry air, residual cold airmass, calm winds and clear skies are the recipe for a very cold night. Look for low to fall into the 18 to 23 degree range across all of central Alabama. The surface high will also help to create nice afternoon conditions on Saturday and Sunday with sunny skies and light winds. Temperatures will recover into the lower and middle 50s on both Saturday and Sunday. The surface high will slide east of the area late Sunday and on Monday. This will cause winds to switch around to the south, meaning moisture and heat will increase. Temperatures will reach the 60s for afternoon highs on Monday and Tuesday. Some spots could top the upper 60s on Monday and Tuesday south of Tuscaloosa.

With a very progressive pattern across the US, our weather will continue to change. Another deep trough will develop just west of Alabama and will swing through the area on Tuesday and Wednesday. This will send a cold front through the state late on Tuesday, with colder air following behind on Wednesday and Thursday. At this point, I don’t see the ingredients for severe weather coming together with this storm system. We’ll watch the severe weather parameters incase anything changes. Temperatures will cool into the lower 50s for highs on Wednesday and Thursday.

The trough quickly moves out on Thursday and Friday, which will mark the beginning of another warming trend on Friday and Saturday.
