Warmer Weather Returns…Rain Ahead… Wednesday Afternoon Forecast Update 5 PM

A good Wednesday to you! After a very cold start to the day, temperatures warmed very nicely this afternoon. Be sure to scroll down for a list of our morning lows. As the deep eastern US trough continues to move east, the cold airmass associated with the trough is moving east with it. An area of high pressure is located southeast of Alabama now, which is allowing a south wind to develop. The south wind will bring higher moisture levels into the deep south between now and the weekend. This means lows and highs will continue to warm a bit.

The pattern we’ve been in the past few months have continued to favor quick weather changes. This is due to the lack of blocking in the upper levels of the atmosphere. So far, there are no signs of this happening, so look for quick weather changes to continue over the next few weeks.

Temperatures will reach the upper 50s on Thursday with middle to upper 60s on Friday and Saturday. Clouds will also increase on Friday and Saturday. A small disturbance will bring a few showers or some light rain late Friday and during the day on Saturday. While most spots will see some rain, totals will be rather light. I don’t expect totals to exceed 1/4th of an inch.

The weekend and early next week will feature a southwest flow aloft. This will likely keep our weather unsettled through Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. Look for several storm systems to impact our weather over the weekend and early next week. Data is still all over the board on next week’s forecast, so we may have to update the forecast somewhat as the week progresses; stay tuned for that. Data is getting more consistent on the Tuesday/Wednesday system. The upper level low west of Alabama will move east early next week, and will likely spin up a strong area of low pressure at the surface. Showers and storms will move into the area on Tuesday or Wednesday. If the low tracks just to the north of Alabama, we’ll have to watch for the risk of strong storms.

Cold Temps This Morning! Warmer Soon… – Wednesday Update 10am

There’s no doubt we’ve had out first real cold snap of the 2011/2012 winter season, with lows between 12 and 23 across central Alabama this morning. Even at 10am, temperatures are still at or below freezing across much of the area. Above is the 10am temperature map for central Alabama.

We will start a modifying trend this afternoon, with highs back in the 50s. Expect a good supply of sun today, as an area of high pressure moves right across central Alabama. We’ll catch a south flow starting this evening and on Thursday. Moisture levels will increase ahead of a weak area of low pressure. Showers will likely increase late on Friday or during the day Saturday. Afternoon highs will return into the middle 60s on Friday and Saturday, so if you’re a warm weather fan, the cold air is moving out for now.

There are signs of another cold snap in the next 7 to 10 days.

I’ll have a more detailed discussion on here this afternoon.

Here’s a list of the morning lows from weather watchers and Airports:

Hamilton: 13

Tuscaloosa: 20

Hayden: 16

Birmingham: 22

Montgomery: 19

Mobile: 25

Coker: 18

Columbus, MS: 20

Meridian, MS: 21
