Rain Tonight, Snow Thoughts for Wednesday… Tuesday Update 10:10 PM

A good Tuesday night to you! There’s a chance of a few snow flakes tomorrow morning through the midday hours, but this doesn’t look like a big deal at all. Most of the area will see a cold rain through lunch on Wednesday. Above is the precipitation image from about 10pm. There’s lots of rain streaming in from the southwest, so look for a good soaking to continue for much of the night. The area boxed in blue is all snow over portions of Arkansas and northern Louisiana. The precipitation is increasing, so the National Weather service has issued a winter weather advisory for much of North Mississippi and the northeastern corner of Alabama. This is where the snow will fall heavy enough late tonight and during the morning/midday hours tomorrow to stick.

Below is the 850 mb temperature chart. The large blue line represents the 0 degree Celsius line. Sometimes this can be a good indicator of a rain snow line. According to the radar trends and reports to the west, rain seems to be changing to snow behind that line. Temperatures not only at the surface but also aloft will continue to cool through the night. A strong upper level disturbance is moving into the southeast now. This will cause the atmosphere to cool enough for rain to change to a rain/snow mix. According to the latest data, I wouldn’t be surprised if rain mixes with a little light snow or flurries as far south as Tuscaloosa and Birmingham between 6am and 1pm on Wednesday.

This event is not expected to become anything major. The lowest 1,000ft of the atmosphere will stay at or above freezing. This will melt most snow flakes before reaching the ground, so this will keep the snow from sticking in our area. Areas near and south of Tuscaloosa will likely experience all rain. We’ll keep you updated on any sudden changes.

Radar Update/Forecast Update… A Few Snow Flakes Tomorrow? Tuesday Update 4:45 PM

There’s lots of rain in the area now and rain can be expected for the rest of the evening and tonight. While it won’t rain all night, rain will come and go through the night and early on Wednesday. All outdoor events this evening and tonight stand a very high chance of getting rained on. Take the rain gear with you! The good news is that the rain is mainly light across west and central Alabama. Rain totals could reach 1 to 2 inches between now and noon on Wednesday.

A strong upper level disturbance will bring a chance of some snow flakes mixed in the rain to the north of Tuscaloosa tomorrow morning through the midday hours. With a warm and wet ground, nothing is expected to stick across our northern counties, and there will be no travel issues from icy roads. Any travel issues will be the typical issues we see from wet roads. Temperatures will remain cold through Wednesday and Thursday. We will stay in the 40s all day on Wednesday and lower 50s on Thursday. Skies will become sunny by Thursday and Friday. A reinforcing shot of cooler air will return on Saturday, with highs returning into the upper 40s.

Lots of Rain Moving into the Area Now! – Tuesday Update 3pm

A good Tuesday afternoon to you! There’s lots of rain moving into west Alabama now, so if you have plans to Dickens Downtown in Northport or any other event happening in the area, take the rain gear with you! Light to moderate rain will spread in from the southwest through this evening and should be in the Tuscaloosa/Northport area by 4pm. This rain will last much of the evening, night and into early on Wednesday. It won’t rain non-stop, but rain will continue steady for several hours at a time. Most of the rain is fairly light, but there are some heaver pockets imbedded. All of us will stand a good chance of picking up nearly 1 inch of rain between now and Wednesday afternoon. Temperatures will also remain cold, with many spots falling into the lower 40s by sunset and upper 30s by daybreak.

Chilly Today, A Few Showers…Snow Flakes on Wednesday?… Tuesday Update 10am

Its cold this morning across our area, with many spots in west Alabama in the 40s. The cold front has passed Birmingham and Demopolis, where temperatures are now falling fast. Look for temperatures to remain very chilly through this afternoon, with many spots staying in the 40s for the rest of the day. Our forecast high of 57 happened in Tuscaloosa around 5am this morning. In-fact, temperatures dropped a little faster than expected. Most of the rain is in central and east Alabama now, but a few additional showers are possible in west Alabama later today. I don’t expect anything that heavy, but a light shower or two will continue. The heavier rain will stay in east Alabama along the cold front for the rest of the day.

A cold core upper level low will move overhead tomorrow. That will help to develop a surface low over southeast Alabama. This will send moisture into the cold air over us. Look for a cold and rainy day. Temperatures will stay in the 40s all day on Wednesday. As the core of the upper level low moves over the area, rain showers will mix with a few snow flakes for areas near and north of Vernon, Fayette, Jasper and Cullman during the day on Wednesday. No problems are exepcted at this time. It doesn’t look like that will amount to much either. Just a cold rain is expected for the Tuscaloosa and Birmingham areas and points south. We’ll keep an eye on any quick changes. Snow showers are much more likely in the Huntsville area.
