Memorial Day Forecast… Updated Monday at 4:45pm

I hope you are having a wonderful Memorial Day! There’s not doubt that our weather has turned hot and fast. Temperatures are in the middle 90s this afternoon, and we can expect even warmer weather over the next few days. A strong ridge is positioned over the southeast, and it’s forecasted to stay put through the end of the week.

Skies will stay partly cloudy to mostly sunny over the next 5 day 7 days. There could be one or two showers, but the chance of rain is less than 20%, so many of us will not see rain. I think the best shot of getting any rain will be from the sea-breeze. During the summer, some afternoons are cooled off by a sea-breeze boundary. As the land heats up and the ocean stays rather cool, a difference in pressure sets up, forcing a boundary of cooler air northward. Showers and storms normally fire up along this boundary, which does even more to cool us off. Typically, this only happens in extreme southAlabama, but the boundaries can make it as far north asTuscaloosa. I doubt Tuscaloosa will get any organized rain over the next 5 days, but places along and south ofHWY80 could get these afternoon storms.

Our forecast will remain hot and humid through next weekend, with a high in the middle to upper 90s. Heat index values will top 100 degrees at times on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Each day will start off sunny, with a few afternoon clouds and that stray shower or two. So far, there are no signs of heavy rain or storms over the next 7 days.

The tropics remain quiet, but the gulf is heating up and we’re getting into our Atlantic Hurricane Season. Usually,Alabamaisn’t impacted by anything major until later in the summer or early fall.

Be sure to join me on WVUA-TV at 5, 6, and 10. Have a great Memorial Day!
