Friday Afternoon Weather Update – 3:20 PM

A good Friday to you! A heat advisory has been issued for the entire WVUA-TV coverage area until 7 PM on Sunday due to the extreme heat. Temperatures are well above average and could get a bit warmer over the next couple of days. This is a setup where it is easy for heat exhaustion and heat stroke to occur. Drink plenty of fluids to stay well hydrated. This includes water and Gatorade. Also, try to avoid working outdoors during peak heating hours.

Temperatures have made it into the upper 90s this afternoon, with a heat index value of 107 to 110. Highs will get closer to 100 degrees over the weekend, with an average temperature of 100 degrees on Saturday and 101 on Sunday. Heat index values will have no problem rising to 110 both days. Rain chances remain very low, so don’t expect a cool-down from a passing storm. In-fact, rain chances are only at 10% through Tuesday. Our summer ridge is moving in and will be in full-force over the next few days. The ridge will back down just a bit on Wednesday and Thursday, which will set us up with a slightly better coverage of afternoon storm. Plus, temperatures will cool down a couple of degrees. High temperatures will top out in the 96 to 99 degree range.

The tropics are heating up again, with two areas of concern. One tropical wave is in the eastern Caribbean, and is not expected to move into the Gulf of Mexico. The second wave is well out in the central Atlantic. As of now, data develops this system into a tropical storm and moves it into the central Atlantic in 5 days. We still have plenty of time to watch that feature. Be sure to join me on WVUA-TV news at 5, 6, and 10 for more. Have a great weekend!
