Snow Update…

We continue to monitor the radar over central Mississippi as several reports of moderate to heavy snow have been received. Temperatures have dropped into the mid 30s over central Mississippi, and are beginning to drop over eastern Mississippi with Meridian at 39°.

A band of precipitation developed from Huntsville to Tuscaloosa, but most of this activity is not reaching the ground. Expect temperatures to begin dropping in Tuscaloosa and west-central Alabama over the next couple of hours as main snow shield shifts closer toward the area. At this time, the greatest chance of accumulating snow still looks to be along and south of I-20/59, where a Winter Weather Advisory will take effect at 11 PM.

We will continue to post additional updates throughout the night. Make sure and join us tonight at 10 for the latest weather and news.

Latest Discussion/Snow Approaching

Talk about some wild weather! Snow has been falling along the Texas Gulf Coast today and places like Houston northeastward to Fort Polk and Alexandria Louisiana are now reporting snow. Winter storm warnings are up for these areas as 1” to 3” accumulations are possible this evening. If you’ve been watching the super six championship games live on WVUA-TV today you may have noticed our special crawl that has been running. We now have a winter weather advisory in place for tonight between 11PM and 6AM. The counties in the advisory are those in far southwest Alabama, northward to the Tuscaloosa County line, and northeast to the Georgia state line. If you are traveling to Atlanta for the SEC Championship game be sure to give yourself some extra driving time. Winter weather advisories mean that some icy patches may develop, especially on elevated surfaces and overpasses. Use extra caution on the roads early tomorrow, especially in areas south of Tuscaloosa.

I’m thinking there may be a swath of heavier snow totals, up to an inch, over northern sections of Marengo and Perry counties eastward. I still can’t rule out a dusting of snow for many spots in the rest of area. This will not be a major winter storm and the moisture is expected to depart early tomorrow. In fact, we will have some sunshine by tomorrow afternoon. Nevertheless, it will be neat to see a few snowflakes late tonight, especially considering it’s the holiday season. As mentioned earlier in the discussion, if you are in areas prone to seeing more snow, be sure to snap some pictures for us. Here is our address: wxpics@wvuatv.com

As for the rest of the forecast, the active pattern continues. Clouds will return on Monday and there may be a few showers Monday evening. Low pressure will bring a return flow of milder/moist air Monday night and on Tuesday. I’m expecting rain to lift in on Tuesday and there may be some thunder in the mix. A cold front associated with the system will sweep through Tuesday night and early on Wednesday, with additional rain. The wet weather should depart, with some lingering cloud cover Wednesday afternoon. Thursday and Friday should be dry days, with sunshine. Another system may enter the area next Saturday, with rain possible. Be sure to tune in tonight for the latest on the winter weather. Have a great evening!
