Sunday Afternoon Weather Discussion-2:10 p.m.

A happy Father’s Day to you! Today is the fist official day of summer, and it certainly feels like summer. Temperatures this afternoon are in the upper 90s in many locations, with heat index values approaching 108 at times. As the evening progresses, temperatures will being to slowly cool into the upper 80s just after sunset and middle 70s at midnight. With dewpoints in the middle 70s, it is going to be a muggy evening for us. The ridge that has been in place for several days now is slowly progressing westward, which will allow for a stray storm in the forecast beginning on Tuesday and lasting through the weekend. Don’t expect a washout or any organized thunderstorms. In-fact, feel very fortunate if you pick up any rainfall.

Temperatures will trend downward a few degrees on Tuesday, with highs in the middle 90s. That’s better than upper 90s, but it is still going to be hot, with heat index values over 100 degrees. The best way to stay cool over the next several days is to simply stay indoors during the afternoon heating. Try to limit outdoor work to the morning and evening hours. If you have a trip planned to the pool or the river, wear plenty of sunscreen because the UV index is going to be very high over the next few days.

There are some indications that the ridge will re-intensify late next week, with temperatures returning into the upper 90s. With a lot of moisture present, humidity will remain high. Be sure to join me tonight at 10 p.m. for the latest on your forecast on WVUA-TV.
