Wednesday Afternoon Update: “More on Gustav” 4:22 p.m.

All eyes are on Gustav this afternoon, which is now starting to pull away from Haiti. This tropical storm is forecasted to grow into a major hurricane over the coming days. The forecast cone, as you can see in the graphic, has the system crossing Cuba and tracking through the Gulf of Mexico. Our best forecast at this point has the system aimed for south Mississippi, although Alabama and Louisiana are in a landfall threat zone. If the system stays on the present forecast track, we will see impacts along the Gulf coast starting late Monday. The current forecast track would certainly mean rough weather for our area on Tuesday and Wednesday. Once again, we could deal with windy conditions, flooding issues, and the threat for tornadoes. This all depends on Gustav’s actual track, so stay tuned as we fine tune the details. Needless to say there will be a landfall along the Gulf coast and if you have big travel plans for the Labor Day Weekend, stay tuned!

Our weather will be rather calm tonight, with some areas of fog developing late. You can expect a partly to mostly sunny sky for tomorrow and Friday, with highs warming into the middle 90s. The sky will grow partly to mostly cloudy on Saturday and Sunday as a front stalls nearby. This will bring us a chance for a stray shower or thunderstorm on Saturday and Sunday. Of-course, the weather will go downhill quickly by Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, if Gustav’s current forecast track holds true. Be sure to stay with WVUA Weather for more details!

A Big Hat! If you heard rumors today, that a large houndstooth hat was rolling around West Alabama today. Well, that rumor was correct. A concession stand in Bryant-Denny stadium will be the home of this large hat resembling the one that once belonged to coach Bryant.
