Thursday Afternoon Update: 5:00 p.m.

Numerous showers and thunderstorms have developed northwest of our area. I do expect showers and thunderstorms to develop closer to home this afternoon and during the early evening hours. A boundary is making a push towards the I-20 corridor. As is the case during this time of year, the loss of daytime heating will allow most of the rain to dissipate overnight. Tomorrow we will have more clouds around, with a good chance for a shower or thunderstorm during the afternoon.

Our weekend is going to be a hot one as we kick off the month of August. Highs will be reaching the middle to upper 90s, with only isolated thunderstorms possible. The bulk of the rain will shift into south Alabama for Saturday and Sunday. By Sunday a disturbance will develop near South Mississippi and this feature may help to trigger a few afternoon thunderstorms for Monday and Tuesday of next week. I still expect plenty of sunshine and hot temperatures, with highs in the mid to upper 90s. The heat index will likely top the 100 degree mark at times. Also, don’t forget to send in pictures of your pet beating the heat. It’s the dog days of summer and we’re asking viewers to send in pictures of their dog beating the heat. Send your images to We already have some great pictures and we will share those with you on our live broadcast.
