Tuesday Afternoon Update: 4:19 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm popped up near the City of Tuscaloosa and this storm produced frequent cloud to ground lightning and dangerous straight-line winds. The storm is rather small, but it is packing quite a punch. I expect this storm to slowly drift towards the highway 69 corridor.

Isolated thunderstorms have been the story for today and with little rain, temperatures have been above average. Highs have been near 97 degrees, with heat index values ranging between 100 and 105. The storms will diminish tonight, with lows dropping into 70s. Tomorrow will be another hot day, but I do think thunderstorms will be more numerous by the afternoon. Highs tomorrow should remain in the lower 90s.

We’re still monitoring a low pressure trough in the northern Gulf. Also, there is a disturbance approaching from the northwest. These features will help to bring a good chance for a shower or thunderstorm, as the ridge will lessen its grip on Alabama. You can expect a partly to mostly cloudy sky for Thursday and Friday, with a good chance for a passing shower or thunderstorm. Some of the storms may be severe, with gusty straight line winds. The additional clouds and better coverage of rain will help to keep our temperatures in the lower 90s. Some spots may only reach highs in the 80s. By Saturday a front will setup shop over south Alabama and this will be the greatest focus for thunderstorms development. At this point, I’m expecting more sunny periods for our first weekend of August, with isolated afternoon thunderstorm development.
