Monday Afternoon Update: 3:48 p.m.

Good Afternoon! You don’t see cold fronts push through our area too often in the month of July. A front moved through last night and this boundary was followed by some much drier air. You could really notice the difference earlier today as it felt rather crisp and not as humid. Tonight the sky will be mostly clear and it’s going to feel great during the evening hours. Temperatures tonight will bottom out in the low 60s and there may be some 50-degree readings in areas north of Tuscaloosa. The record low for Tuscaloosa tomorrow morning is 56, which was set in 1967.

The dry conditions will prevail through Wednesday, with highs in the mid 90s. A strong high pressure area will be centered over northern Arkansas. Even though it’s going to feel hot, the lower dewpoints will make the heat bearable. You can expect a mostly sunny sky, with clear conditions at night. By Thursday and Friday a moist flow will make it feel hotter and quite uncomfortable during the daytime hours. Some cooler air aloft, associated with a disturbance to our southeast, will bring us a chance for isolated thunderstorms starting on Friday and continuing into the weekend.

Right now Bertha is a tropical storm churning east of Bermuda. The system ended up passing very close to Bermuda and this has brought tropical storm force winds and heavy rain to that island. This system is also producing rip currents along the U.S. East Coast. Now another system appears to be organizing over the central Atlantic and a depression may develop by 4:00 p.m. CST. If this tropical disturbance continues to grow it may become Cristobal.
