…UPDATED FOR UNIONTOWN TORNADO DETAILS. STORM SURVEYS COMPLETED…

A LINE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS MOVED THROUGH CENTRAL ALABAMA THURSDAY MORNING AND AFTERNOON IN ADVANCE OF AN APPROACHING COLD FRONT. THE THREAT FOR SEVERE WEATHER WAS LIMITED AS THE WARM MOIST AND UNSTABLE AIR EXPECTED TO MOVE NORTHWARD WAS NOT AS STRONG AS EXPECTED. STILL…THERE WAS SUFFICIENT MOISTURE AND INSTABILITY TO PRODUCE WIDESPREAD RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF ONE TO THREE INCHES…WHICH REPORTED IN WIDESPREAD PONDING OF WATER ON ROADWAYS AND A FEW ROAD CLOSURES. ADDITIONALLY, THERE WERE REPORTS OF POSSIBLE TORNADO DAMAGE IN UNIONTOWN.

WATCHES: TORNADO WATCH #18 WAS IN EFFECT FROM 955 AM UNTIL 5 PM.

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE METEOROLOGISTS SURVEYED DAMAGE IN SOUTHERN PERRY COUNTY AND DETERMINED THE DAMAGE TO BE CAUSED BY AN EF-0 TORNADO WITH MAXIMUM WINDS OF 80 MPH. THE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN AT THE INTERSECTION OF CAHABA ROAD AND YELVERTON STREET IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF UNIONTOWN, WHERE IT UPROOTED A FEW TREES. IT THEN TRAVELED NORTHEASTWARD, UPROOTING MORE TREES ORIENTED ACROSS THE PATH,CAUSING MINOR ROOF AND SIDING DAMAGE TO 5 HOMES. ONE HOME ON CHURCH STREET WAS SHIFTED OFF ITS FOUNDATION. FROM THERE THE TORNADO TRAVELED THROUGH A WOODED AREA, BREAKING LARGE BRANCHES OFF TREES BEFORE IT LIFTED. KEY INDICATORS OF THIS WEAK TORNADO INCLUDED VERY SMALL AMOUNTS OF LEAF AND GRASS SPLATTERING AND ROOF DAMAGE ON THE DOWNSTREAM SIDE OF THE HOMES. SEVERAL EYEWITNESSES CONFIRMED SEEING THE TORNADO AS IT LEFT THE AREA. THE PATH LENGTH OF THE TORNADO WAS APPROXIMATELY 0.6 MILES LONG, WITH A MAXIMUM PATH WIDTH OF 100YARDS.

A good Friday afternoon to you! It’s been a very nice day across our state, with a sunny sky and cool temperatures. Many spots are back in the upper 50s to lower 60s this afternoon, which is a little above average. The storm system that brought heavy rain to much of the state is well northeast of the area. An area of high pressure has moved into the area in wake of the departing storm system. High pressure is associated with sunny skies and light to calm winds.

The upper air trough that’s bringing a slight cool down will deepen a bit across the southeast and will cool temperatures a little more on Saturday and Sunday. Many spots will stay in the 50s all day, but most spots will warm to above 55 degrees. Lows will fall well below freezing Saturday and Sunday night, with lows between 22 and 27. The typical cold spots will fall into the lower 20s. I expect lots of frost both Sunday and Monday morning due to calm winds and a moist ground. Sinking air associated with high pressure will likely keep skies sunny through the weekend and first part of next week.

Since we continue under a very progressive pattern, the weather will not remain the same for long. Ridging will move into the area as the upper air trough moves east. This will warm temperatures into the lower 60s on Monday and upper 60s to 70 on Tuesday and Wednesday. A south flow will also aid in the warming temperatures. As moisture increases off the Gulf, we can expect clouds to increase on Tuesday and Wednesday. Another trough starts to move into the area on Wednesday and Thursday. This will bring a strong cold front into the area sometime Wednesday night or Thursday morning. The good news is that I don’t see any signs of severe weather with that system. Look for heavy rain to develop and move into our area Wednesday evening into Thursday.

Some data brings a shot of very cold air into the deep south on Friday and Saturday. While confidence in this setup is increasing, model data is still questionable on the amount of cold air. We’ll update the forecast as we get closer to the event.

A good Thursday evening to you! The final batch of shower and thunderstorms are working through parts of the area this evening, as a cold front moves in from the northwest. The storms are below severe limits and should stay that way through the rest of the evening. If you get any additional rain at your house, it won’t last long, and all rain will be out of the area by 10pm.

Temperatures will drop some behind the front, with lows in the lower to middle 40s tonight. Some spots could reach the upper 30s north of Fayette and Jasper, but we will all stay well above freezing. Skies will gradually go clear late tonight. Friday will feature a nice day, with afternoon highs near 60 degrees. The trough will slowly deepen over the weekend, which will continue to drop a bit. Look for highs in the upper 50s on Saturday and Sunday. Lows will fall into the upper 20s Sunday and Monday morning. A surface high will move across the southeast over the weekend, which will keep skies sunny.

We will continue this very progressive pattern, so the eastern US trough will continue to move east and should be out of our area first thing next week. As heights increase, temperatures will also increase. Look for highs to reach the lower 60s on Monday and middle to upper 60s on Tuesday. A south wind will also aid in the warming process. As moisture increases, temperatures at night will also increase. Look for temperatures back in the 40s at night by Tuesday and Wednesday night.

Skies will become mostly cloudy on Wednesday and Thursday as a weak cold front moves into the area. Some showers will also move into the area at some point on Wednesday and last through Thursday. So far, there are no signs of any very cold weather ahead. We’ll keep an eye on the forecast trends through the weekend and into next week.

Much of the morning has featured heavy rain and strong to severe storms. Much of the area was ok, but Uniontown dealt with some significant wind damage. Here’s the report from the EMA office in Perry County: Uniontown [Perry Co, AL] emergency mngr reports TSTM WND DMG at 10:55 AM CST — 10 homes received damage on church street in uniontown. 4 homes received significant damage with one home shifted off its foundation. possible tornado. There was no warning with that storm.

Radar shows more storms developing along a cold front this afternoon. The atmosphere is worked over from the morning rain, so I don’t expect these storms to grow out of hand. We’ll watch the radar through this evening incase anything reaches severe limits. The best chance of that to happen will be along and north of Interstate 20/59.  The front will move into west Alabama in the next couple of hours and will bring an end to any shower and thunderstorm activity after 8pm.

Here’s the latest look at Radar. A band of showers and storms are developing along a cold front in Central Mississippi. These storms will impact areas along and north of Interstate 20/59 this afternoon through around 8pm. The atmosphere is really worked over from the morning and early afternoon storms, so I don’t expect anything to get out of hand. A stray storm may reach severe limits, but that should be it. Don’t expect a long duration of heavy rain, as this band will remain thin and move through quickly.

Cooler air will arrive this evening once the front passes. Temperatures won’t be overly cold behind the front; in-fact, temperatures will likely stay in the 60s to upper 50s through the weekend. Skies will also become sunny tomorrow and remain sunny through Monday.
