Cool Weather…Some Rain on Friday… Dry Weekend… Tuesday Afternoon Forecast Update – 5pm

Sevenday_640

Good Tuesday afternoon! It’s been a cool winter day, with highs in the 40s to around 50 across all of west and central Alabama. Due to a sunny sky and light to calm winds, conditions felt pretty nice around lunch. Without the warmth of the sun this evening, temperatures are dropping fast as of 5 pm. Most spots will drop into the 20s for lows tonight, with an average temperature around 27 degrees. Skies are expected to remain mostly clear tonight, but a few clouds are possible at times tonight and on Wednesday.

Temperatures will rebound quickly on Wednesday, as afternoon highs reach the middle 50s. Some spots could reach 60 on Thursday, but a weak cold front will spread a nice batch of clouds into the area. If skies remain cloudy to mostly cloudy, temperatures will have a hard time reaching 60. A stray shower is possible on Thursday, but most spots won’t get a drop.

A secondary cold front will push into Alabama on Friday. With some moisture ahead of the front, I expect a higher coverage of rain. Most models have backed off on the amount of rain for Friday, so I’m losing confidence in the 1/2 an inch to 1 inch rain totals. It looks more like a light rain event for the state. If a nice downpour or two can develop over west and central Alabama, some isolated totals may reach 1/2 an inch. The good news is the lower rain totals will not have an impact on river levels. Much of the west and central Alabama river levels have dropped below flood stage, with the higher levels over Marengo County only at this point. By Friday, river levels along the Black Warrior and Tombigbee should be close to normal.

The light shower activity will move out quickly Friday evening or Friday night, with dry and cooler air moving in for the weekend. Highs will top out near 50 on Saturday and 56 on Sunday. Skies will become mostly sunny for the entire weekend. Look for overnight lows to drop into the upper 20s Saturday night. A gradual warming trend will warm into the 60s on Monday and Tuesday. Another storm system will move into Alabama by mid-week.
