Nice and Mild Week…Colder Air Over the Weekend… – Monday Afternoon Forecast 5:30pm

Good Monday afternoon! Our weather has turned out so nice today, with ample sunshine and mild temperatures. Many spots started off pretty chilly, but a quick warm-up took over during the late morning and early afternoon hours. Temperatures made it into the lower 80s across much of west and central Alabama. The pattern we’re in right now is really calm. We’ll deal with very similar conditions through Thursday, with mild days and cool nights.
The trough has moved out of our area, and a flat flow will continue overhead for a few days. This means no extreme cold or extreme warm weather through Thursday. A very deep upper air trough will develop across the central US as we move into Friday. Skies will become partly cloudy on Friday as moisture levels return a bit, but humidity should remain fairly low. I don’t see enough moisture moving into the area to cause a big weekend rain event. If you have plans to the Alabama/Mississippi State game on Saturday, the chance of rain is looking pretty low. A stray shower will become possible at any time on Friday and Saturday, but dry air will quickly take over on Sunday and Monday.
We’ll be watching Tropical Storm Sandy very close over the next few days, as it moves north and into the Bahamas later this week. Sandy could become a strong hurricane by mid or late in the week, then slam into the Bahamas as it continues it’s northward track. At this point, there is no threat to Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Most model data takes Sandy to the north and either moves it up the east coast or turns Sandy out to sea. If the storm is strong and moves up the east coast, then very chilly weather will take over Saturday night through Tuesday. Highs could have a tough time reaching 60 degrees, with lows near freezing Sunday night and Monday night. At this point, the forecast will call for a high near 70 on Saturday and near 65 on Sunday and Monday, with lows in the upper 30s. There is room for error here because of the track of Sandy. Stay tuned for updates.
Alabama takes on the Mississippi State University Bulldogs on Saturday. Kickoff is at 7:30pm at Bryant-Denny Stadium. We can expect a rather cool game, with temperatures falling into the 50s after kickoff under a partly cloudy sky. Winds could be rather gusty Saturday evening and night. The chance of rain is very low by game-time, as the cold front passes east of the area.
