Severe Storms Over Mississippi… Some Storms Expected Here Tonight… Monday Evening Update 9pm
August 13, 2012 Leave a comment
Good Monday evening to you! We’re watching a cluster of strong to severe storms over north Mississippi tonight. These cells are moving southeast at 20 to 30mph, but the eastward progression is having a tough time. This is likely due to the rain cooled, more stable environment over Alabama. The midday complex of storms that moved through the area really did a lot to stabilize the atmosphere. Much of central Mississippi broke out in full sunshine this afternoon, allowing temperatures to warm well into the upper 80s or lower 90s. As a weak cold front moves into the warmer environment over central Mississippi, storms are becoming severe. There was even a tornado warning a little earlier just west of Starkville.
As the storms move towards the southeast, there’s a good chance active weather will increase in parts of our area. While the chance of severe weather is low across our area, the environment favors the risk of a few damaging wind gusts overnight. With instability lacking a bit, I don’t expect widespread damaging winds across west or central Alabama. The risk of scattered storms will continue across west Alabama through 3am, then shift into east Alabama towards daybreak. Storms will likely produce lots of lightning, so go indoors if a storm moves into your area. If a severe thunderstorm warning is issued for your area, go indoors and stay away from windows. Again, this is not a major threat, but it’s worth keeping an eye on radar over the next few hours. If anything gets out of hand and reaches severe levels, I’ll post lots of updates right here on the blog, on facebook and twitter.
