Good Rain Chances Continue…Some Strong Storms… – Wednesday Afternoon Forecast 4:40pm

Good Wednesday afternoon to you! We dealt with a nice rain event across many west and central Alabama towns. As of 4:40pm, rain is still falling in extreme west Alabama, but that will gradually end over the next couple of hours. Earlier today, there were a few flash flooding issues under the heavier storms; in-fact, there was a flash flood warning at one point for Jefferson and Shelby County. Some isolated flash flooding issues occurred over parts of west Alabama. While most spots got rain today, some spots stayed dry. If you didn’t get the rain as of yet, there’s still a chance of scattered storms at any point this evening and tonight. The risk of rain is lower for the rest of the evening, due to the heavy coverage of storms earlier today. The atmosphere is a little more stable across central and west Alabama, with many spots in the 70s at this hour.

An upper level low has moved into the southeastern US, and that is bringing lift to our area. With cooler temperatures above the surface and very moist air at the surface, the risk of rain will remain high until this system weakens and moves out late in the weekend. While the best chance of rain will occur between lunch and 10pm Thursday through Saturday, rain is possible during the overnight hours and morning hours. Keep the rain gear handy… Storms won’t last that long in your area, so this will not be an all day or all night type of rain event. Rain may fall at your house for an hour, and then move on. There is a risk of a few severe storms through Saturday, but the risk should remain isolated. Damaging winds is the primary concern with the storms. Other threats include isolated flash flooding and intense cloud to ground lightning.

Temperatures will remain a little cooler over the next few days due to the extra cloud cover and storms. We can expect a mixture of clouds and sun through Saturday, with highs between 88 and 91 degrees. Once rain moves into your area, look for a nice cool-down for the rest of the evening. Overnight lows will fall into the lower 70s each night through next week.

The upper level low will weaken and lift out on Sunday and Monday. Expext rain chances to drop into the 30% range on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The heat will gradually build back into the area, with highs in the lower to middle 90s. Skies will become mostly sunny late in the weekend and early next week. Storm rain totals will reach 2″ – 5″ between today and Sunday (This includes what fell this morning and early afternoon).
