Sunny and Mild Morning…Afternoon Storms Likely… Friday Morning Update 10:45am

Good Friday morning to you! The weather is very quiet to start off the moning, with no rain across central and west Alabama. While that’s the case now, I expect scattered to numerous showers and storms to develop after lunch. As heating continues to build across our area, the air will start to rise and storms will develop across much of the area. Rain chances are at 60% today, so not everyone will get the rain. Radar above shows lots of shower and thunderstorm activity to our southwest. As these storms move our way, additional storms will develop ahead of the main batch and will continue through tonight.

Above is our visible satellite image, taken at 10:45am Friday. Skies are sunny across all of west and central Alabama at this hour, but clouds will start to develop soon. As the surface heats, clouds will pop up, then afternoon showers and storms. There’s a stationary front just to our north, and lots of tropical moisture over our area, plus, a weak upper level trough across the deep south. These factors will help to kick off scattered to numerous storm. Due to the extra sun, I’ll have to bump temperatures up to the lower  90s this afternoon. Once showers and storms develop, look for temperatures to cool nicely this evening. The risk of rain and storms will gradually decrease after 10pm tonight. A few showers and storms are still possible during the overnight, but the coverage will decrease.

The weekend forecast will include the risk of scattered showers and storms, but the chance will be lower. Look for a 40% coverage of rain and storms over the weekend. While the chance is lower, expect storms in the area. The best chance of rain over the weekend will happen during the afternoon and evening hours. Some spots won’t get rain over the weekend, but if you do get rain, it won’t last very long. Storms should come and go over the weekend, with a partly cloudy sky. Highs will reach the lower to middle 90s over the weekend.

The risk of a few scattered storms are still possible early next week.
