Lots and Lots of Rain! Thursday Morning Forecast Update 7:20am

Good Thursday morning to you! It’s nice to see a radar like this when we’ve been going through a long dry stretch with hot temperatures. Lots of rain has developed on radar over east and central Mississippi and is spreading into west Alabama. As of 7am, this batch of rain covers much of Sumter, Greene, Pickens, Tuscaloosa, Lamar, Fayette, Walker, Marion and Winston County. This batch of moderate rain is moving east at a slow 10 to 20 mph. Look for light to moderate rain to continue for much of west Alabama through noon, with rain increasing for the rest of the central and west Alabama area through the morning. The rain will keep temperatures cooler today, so don’t look for temperatures to get above 83 in many spots. Thick clouds and rain will also keep things fairly stable, so I don’t expect any big issues with severe weathe this afternoon.
Many spots will pick up between 0.30″ and 1.30″ of rain today, which is a blessing for the ones that need it most. Our farmers have been having a hard time in the developing drought, so this much needed rain will help get things growing again. Rain will continue on and off for much of our Thursday. Lift from a weak upper level low and stationary front is hanging right across central and west Alabama. It sure looks like everyone will get some good rain today. Areas east of Interstate 65 and south of I-20 are dry for now, but rain will increase there later this morning and early afternoon.
The risk of rain and storms will remain high for Friday as well. Look for scattered to numerous showers and storms. As the best lift moves out of the area, rain chancees will gradually go down over the weekend. We’re still forecasting a 40% chance of scattered storms on Saturday and Sunday, so many spots will get that heavy storm, mainly during the afternoon. I expect skies to become partly cloudy over the weekend.
I’ll be speaking to the kids at Elizabeth Child Development Center in Tuscaloosa this morning. Look for video on WVUA-TV news at 5, 6, and 10pm.
