Cool Weekend, Warmer Next Week. Forecast Update Friday 6:30 PM

Good Friday evening! I had a great time speaking to the 1st grade classes at Cottondale Elementary School this morning. You can find video from the visit on our main website at wvuatv.com. Click on the weather tab and click weather visits.

It’s been a much cooler day, with temperatures falling into the 50s. Strong cold air advection offset afternoon heating. If you stepped outside at any point today, I’m sure you noticed the strong northwest winds. The air is much drier now, and clouds are starting to break up a bit. While there is still a mostly cloudy sky overhead, skies will gradually become partly cloudy tonight.

An upper air disturbance will work across the northern Gulf of Mexico over the next 24 hours. That will help to bring additional clouds into Alabama, but I don’t expect any rain at this point. Any showers should remain south of Montgomery and Thomasville. Highs will return into the upper 50s tomorrow afternoon after a start in the lower 30s. The sun will peak out at times through the day. Sunshine will increase on Sunday with highs in the lower 60s. Sunday morning will start off with a light freeze.

A quick warming trend will begin late in the weekend and early next week. Look for highs to reach the upper 60s on Monday. Skies will become partly to mostly cloudy late on Monday as warm and moist air advection brings a little cloud cover into the area. A good chance of showers will return ahead of a warm front on Tuesday. Highs could reach the lower or middle 70s on Tuesday and Wednesday with lows in the 50s. A cold front will move into the deep south on Wednesday. There is a chance of some strong storms ahead of a big storm system. At this point, I won’t go into the threats because confidence is very low. We’ll update the forecast through the weekend and early next week. There’s no sign of anything very cold behind the front, with highs remaining in the 70s on Thursday and Friday.

Another storm system will be on the heels of Wednesday’s system. More rain may become possible next weekend.
