More Rain Ahead… Friday Afternoon Forecast Discussion – 5pm Update
February 3, 2012 Leave a comment
Good Friday afternoon! Much of the area is dealing with a batch of light to moderate rain this afternoon. A warm front is moving into southwest Alabama now, and a large batch of rain has developed ahead of the front. As the warm front lifts into the Tuscaloosa area later tonight, the batch of moderate rain will move northeast of Tuscaloosa and Birmingham. Expect a few scattered to isolated showers through much the night and into Saturday. Don’t expect a heavy rain all day; in-fact, much of Saturday will feature dry conditions. The sun may peak out from time to time, as temperatures reach the lower 70s.
As the upper air trough moves east, it will gradually weaken. The surface low will track north of Alabama Saturday night, and the trailing cold front will push through our area Sunday morning. We can expect another batch of heavy rain and thunderstorms to move in Saturday evening and into early Sunday morning. The dynamics shear and instability will be lacking with this system, so I don’t expect any problems with severe weather.
Temperatures will cool a little on Monday and Tuesday as the trough shifts into our area. While it will be cooler, temperatures aren’t expected to drop below average. Highs will top out in the upper 50s to lower 60s on Monday and Tuesday. Sunshine will also return in full force, so that will make conditions feel a little better. Lows at night will fall well into the 30s both Tuesday and Wednesday morning. A light freeze is possible in some of the typical cooler spots.
Model data has been hinting at a gulf low on Thursday and Friday of next week. If data is correct, more rain will move into the area late next week. This will bring more rain into west and central Alabama on Thursday and Friday. Highs will remain in the 60s through the end of next week. The forecast will get a little tricky after Tuesday due to the lack of model consistency. We’ll update the forecast as needed.
