Saturday Weather Update

July 25, 2009

It’s been a beautiful last-July day in West Alabama today. A few fair weather clouds, temperatures in the lower-90s and some of that usual summertime humidity. There are three or four thundershowers that have popped up around the area this afternoon. As quickly as they’ve popped up, they’re dying off.

Tonight, we’ll see fair conditions with temperatures bottoming out near 68 degrees.

Tomorrow, a front starts to approach the area from the northwest. I think after lunchtime, we’ll start to see some storms popping up int he area. Chance of rain for Sunday is 30%. Some of those storms could provide brief downpours and frequent lightning.

That front won’t make it all the way to West Alabama.  It will get hung-up in the Tennessee River Valley area, just to the north of us. It will be close enough to keep our weather unsettled for the coming week.  There are decent chances for rain and thunderstorms Monday through Saturday.  The best chances for rain will be on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Right now, I don’t foresee any all-day rain events, but we’ll see bouts of thunderstorms and showers.

We do need the rain, we’re more than five inches behind for the year according to data collected at the Tuscaloosa Regional Airport by the National Weather Service.

The National Drought Monitor paints much of West Alabama in a D-0 (zero) drought condition, meaning we’re abnormally dry. You can check that out by clicking here.

So bottom line on the forecast; we’ll see chances for showers and thunderstorms through Saturday, best chances for rain are Tuesday and Wednesday, don’t expect all-day rain events.

I’ll have more on the forecast tonight at 10:00.  Richard Scott will be back with you Sunday on WVUA News at 10:00.

The Dog Days of Summer: We’re entering the dog days of summer and we’re asking viewers to send in pictures of their dogs beating the heat. Last year we had so much fun with this and we want to do it again. Please send your pictures to: wxpics@wvuatv.com.
